Observation of a new boson at a mass of 125 GeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC

The Pythia program can be used to generate high-energy-physics ''events'', i.e. sets of outgoing particles produced in the interactions between two incoming particles. The objective is to provide as accurate as possible a representation of event properties in a wide range of reactions, within and beyond the Standard Model, with emphasis on those where strong interactions play a role, directly or indirectly, and therefore multihadronic final states are produced. The physics is then not understood well enough to give an exact description; instead the program has to be based on a combination of analytical results and various QCD-based models. This physics input is summarized here, for areas such as hard subprocesses, initial- and final-state parton showers, underlying events and beam remnants, fragmentation and decays, and much more. Furthermore, extensive information is provided on all program elements: subroutines and functions, switches and parameters, and particle and process data. This should allow the user to tailor the generation task to the topics of interest.

Particle dark matter: Evidence, candidates and constraints

QCD and resonance physics. theoretical foundations

We explore the implications for hadron spectroscopy of the "standard" gauge model of weak, electromagnetic, and strong interactions. The model involves four types of fractionally charged quarks, each in three colors, coupling to massless gauge gluons. The quarks are confined within colorless hadrons by a long-range spin-independent force realizing infrared slavery. We use the asymptotic freedom of the model to argue that for the calculation of hadron masses, the short-range quark-quark interaction may be taken to be Coulomb-like. We rederive many successful quark-model mass relations for the low-lying hadrons. Because a specific interaction and symmetry-breaking mechanism are forced on us by the underlying renormalizable gauge field theory, we also obtain new mass relations. They are well satisfied. We develop a qualitative understanding of many features of the hadron mass spectrum, such as the origin and sign of the $\ensuremath{\Sigma}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ mass splitting. Interpreting the newly discovered narrow boson resonances as states of charmonium, we use the model to predict the masses of charmed mesons and baryons.

Demythification of electroproduction local duality and precocious scaling

E. Witten (personal communication) has raised the intriguing possibility that nuclear matter consisting of aggregates of up, down and strange quarks in roughly equal proportions may be less massive than ordinary nuclear matter of the same quark number consisting of protons and neutrons (triplets of non-strange quarks). These nuggets of strange quark matter may be stable for almost any baryon number (A), including values intermediate between those of ordinary nuclei (A≲263) and neutron stars (A ∼ 1057). We use the term ‘nuclearite’ to describe such strange quark nuggets in collision with Earth and suggest experiments to detect these encounters.

Nuclearites—a novel form of cosmic radiation

We ask whether the universe can be a patchwork consisting of distinct regions of matter and antimatter. We demonstrate that, after recombination, it is impossible to avoid annihilation near regional boundaries. We study the dynamics of this process to estimate two of its signatures: a contribution to the cosmic diffuse γ-ray background and a distortion of the cosmic microwave background. The former signal exceeds observational limits unless the matter domain we inhabit is virtually the entire visible universe. On general grounds, we conclude that a matter-antimatter symmetric universe is empirically excluded.
