. Tomographic techniques are successfully applied to obtain 4D images of the tropospheric refractivity in a local dense network of global positioning system (GPS) receivers. We show here how GPS data are processed to obtain the tropospheric slant wet delays and discuss the validity of the processing. These slant wet delays are the observables in the tomographic processing. We then discuss the inverse problem in 4D tropospheric tomography making extensive use of simulations to test the system and define the resolution and the impact of noise. Finally, we use data from the Kilauea network in Hawaii for February 1, 1997, and a local 4×4×40 voxel grid on a region of 400 km2 and 15 km in height to produce the corresponding 4D wet refractivity fields, which are then validated using forecast analysis from the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF). We conclude that tomographic techniques can be used to monitor the troposphere in time and space. Key words: Radio science (remote sensing; instruments and techniques)

4D tropospheric tomography using GPS slant wet delays

[1] With the current data availability from both ground- and space-based sources, the network of ground-based Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, GPS occultation receivers, in situ electron density sensors, and dual-frequency beacon transmitters, the time is right for a comprehensive review of the history, current state, and future directions of ionospheric imaging. A brief introduction and history of ionospheric imaging is presented, beginning with computerized ionospheric tomography. Then, a comprehensive review of the current state of ionospheric imaging is presented. The ability of imaging algorithms to ingest multiple types of data and use advanced inverse techniques borrowed from meteorological data assimilation to produce four-dimensional images of electron density is discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the mathematical basis for the different methods. The science that ionospheric imaging addresses is discussed, and the scientific contributions that ionospheric imaging has made are described. Finally, future directions for this research area are outlined.

History, current state, and future directions of ionospheric imaging

A review of remote sensing technology for lower-tropospheric thermodynamic (TD) profiling is presented with focus on high accuracy and high temporal-vertical resolution. The contributions of these instruments to the understanding of the Earth system are assessed with respect to radiative transfer, land-surface-atmosphere feedback, convection initiation, and data assimilation. We demonstrate that for progress in weather and climate research, TD profilers are essential. These observational systems must resolve gradients of humidity and temperature in the stable or unstable atmospheric surface layer close to the ground, in the mixed layer, in the interfacial layer – usually characterized by an inversion – and the lower troposphere. A thorough analysis of the current observing systems is performed revealing significant gaps that must be addressed to fulfill existing needs. We analyze whether current and future passive and active remote sensing systems can close these gaps. A methodological analysis and demonstration of measurement capabilities with respect to bias and precision is executed both for passive and active remote sensing including passive infrared and microwave spectroscopy, the global positioning system as well as water-vapor and temperature Raman lidar and water-vapor differential absorption lidar. Whereas passive remote sensing systems are already mature with respect to operational applications, active more » remote sensing systems require further engineering to become operational in networks. However, active remote sensing systems provide a smaller bias as well as higher temporal and vertical resolutions. A review of the remote sensing of lower-tropospheric thermodynamic profiles and its indispensable role for the understanding and the simulation of water and energy cycles

As our civilization becomes more dependent on space based technologies, we become more vulnerable to conditions in space weather. Accurate space weather specification and forecasting require proper modeling which account for the coupling between the sun, the magnetosphere, the thermo sphere, the ionosphere and the mesosphere. In spite of the tremendous advances that have been made in understanding the physics behind different space weather phenomena, the ability to specify or predict space weather is limited due to the lack of continuous and extensive observations in these regions. Placing a constellation of GPS receivers in low-Earth orbit, such as the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC), provides an extremely powerful system for continuously and extensively measuring one of these regions, the ionosphere. COSMIC, by use of GPS occultations, will make it possible to obtain continuous and global3-dimensional images of electron density, irregularities and TIDs in the ionosphere and plasmasphere. COSMIC would provide nearly 5600 globally distributed occultations per day suitable for ionospheric sensing. Occultations can be processed individually to obtain vertical profiles of electron density, with vertical resolution of ~lkm, or collectively by means of tomography or data assimilation to obtain 3-D images of electron density or irregularity structure. In this paper we describe the GPS observables for ionospheric sensing and the occultation geometry. Our presentation evolves from discussing simple to more complicated inversion techniques starting with the Abel inversion, gradient-constrained Abel inversion, tomography, and finally data assimilation. In each of these techniques, the accuracy is assessed either via examination of real data from GPSIMET or via simulation. Brief discussions of measuring ionospheric irregularities and TIDs are given.

COSMIC GPS Ionospheric Sensing and Space Weather

As a preliminary step for assessing the impact of global positioning system (GPS) refractive delay data in numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, the GPS zenith tropospheric delays (ZTDs) are analyzed from 51 permanent GPS sites in the western Mediterranean. The objectives are to estimate the error statistics necessary for future assimilation of GPS ZTD data in numerical models and to investigate the variability of the data in this area. The time series, which were derived continuously from November 1998 to June 2001, are compared with independent equivalent values derived from radiosonde profiles and the High-Resolution Limited-Area Model (HIRLAM) NWP model. Based on over two years of data, the difference between radiosonde and GPS ZTD has a standard deviation of 12 mm of delay and a bias of 7 mm of delay. Accuracy and Variability of GPS Tropospheric Delay Measurements of Water Vapor in the Western Mediterranean

The authors develop a minimization functional in order to regularize the inverse problem associated with three-dimensional (3D) ionospheric stochastic tomography. This functional is designed to yield, upon minimization, a solution which maximizes the frequency content of the solution below a certain cutoff, while keeping /spl chi//sup 2/ constant. The authors show how this functional can be rewritten in terms of the correlation function of the image, thereby facilitating the algorithmic implementation of the method. They then implement this functional in a Kalman filter and obtain a smoothing algorithm that acts in both space and time. Finally, they use this technique to perform global scale Global Positioning System (GPS) tomography of the ionospheric electron content.

GPS tomography of the ionospheric electron content with a correlation functional

We have analyzed data from an experiment over the Madrid (Spain) area obtained from 5 GPS receivers and 3 Water Vapor Radiometers (WVR), in order to compare their retrievals of Tropospheric Slant Delays. For this purpose we have fitted a simple gradient model to both types of data, using a Kalman filter to account for the temporal variability of the zenith and gradient parameters. We show that the retrieved gradients with the two instruments are compatible, thus suggesting that the derived slant delays can be useful for tomographic analysis. We compare the estimates of ZWD obtained with the GIPSY and the Bernese software packages. Finally, we compare the estimated gradients with those obtained with HIRLAM, a Numerical Weather Prediction model.

Estimation of Tropospheric Zenith Delay and Gradients over the Madrid Area Using GPS and WVR Data

Tropospheric tomography using data from local networks of Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers is producing encouraging spatio-temporal representations of the wet refractivity field. In this work we present the results from a small-scale geodetic experiment that we carried out at the Onsala Space Observatory. Seven GPS receivers distributed within a radius of 3 km from the center, were deployed during 21 days in the summer 1998. The limited number of sites and their spatial configuration present a challenge for tropospheric tomography. Using novel GPS techniques to determine the vertical structure of the atmosphere, we observed, for one session, a strong horizontal water-vapor gradient with a leading edge at higher altitude than the trailing edge, entering from the north. The vertical structure obtained independently using tomographic techniques matched such situation. These results suggest tomography is a promising technique for the determination of the spatio-temporal structure of the atmosphere. We will present preliminary results of the tropospheric tomography, using simulations and experimental data, together with some comparisons with radiosonde data.

Sensing atmospheric structure: Tropospheric tomographic results of the small-scale GPS campaign at the Onsala Space Observatory

We compare TEC measurements from the NASA Radar Altimeter and DORIS instrument on board TOPEX/POSEIDON with GPS TEC estimates, and evaluate different GPS data analysis strategies. We verify that global tomographic GPS analysis using a voxel grid is well suited for ionospheric calibration of altimeters. We show that a 1-day fit of 20-second-averaged NRA ionospheric correction data versus GPS tomographic TEC data has a bias of 3.4 TECU and a root mean square deviation of 3.2 TECU. Tomographic inversion using simulated data from the Parametrized Ionospheric Model highlights the strong correlation between GPS bias constants, electronic densities at the highest layer, and unmodeled protonospheric TEC. This suggests that GPS TEC estimates at the TOPEX/POSEIDON altitude are more accurate if the bias constants are estimated and if a layer above TOPEX/POSEIDON is added to the grid.
