The rise time of intense radiation determines the maximum field strength atoms can be exposed to before their polarizability dramatically drops due to the detachment of an outer electron. Recent progress in ultrafast optics has allowed the generation of ultraintense light pulses comprising merely a few field oscillation cycles. The arising intensity gradient allows electrons to survive in their bound atomic state up to external field strengths many times higher than the binding Coulomb field and gives rise to ionization rates comparable to the light frequency, resulting in a significant extension of the frontiers of nonlinear optics and (nonrelativistic) high-field physics. Implications include the generation of coherent harmonic radiation up to kiloelectronvolt photon energies and control of the atomic dipole moment on a subfemtosecond $(1{\mathrm{f}\mathrm{s}=10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}15}\mathrm{}\mathrm{s})$ time scale. This review presents the landmarks of the 30-odd-year evolution of ultrashort-pulse laser physics and technology culminating in the generation of intense few-cycle light pulses and discusses the impact of these pulses on high-field physics. Particular emphasis is placed on high-order harmonic emission and single subfemtosecond extreme ultraviolet/x-ray pulse generation. These as well as other strong-field processes are governed directly by the electric-field evolution, and hence their full control requires access to the (absolute) phase of the light carrier. We shall discuss routes to its determination and control, which will, for the first time, allow access to the electromagnetic fields in light waves and control of high-field interactions with never-before-achieved precision.

Noncovalent interactions: a challenge for experiment and theory

A powerful approach to the study of interfaces has been developing rapidly in the past decade. It is based on the spectroscopic methods of second-harmonic (SHG) and sum-frequency generation (SFG). These nonlinear optical techniques, being spectroscopic, provide information at the most fundamental level. A microscopic description of equilibrium and dynamic interface processes requires knowledge of the molecules at the interface, their orientational structure, the energetics that drive chemical and physical processes, and the time scale of molecular motions and relaxation processes. The techniques of second-harmonic and sum-frequency generation have made it possible to selectively probe the chemistry, physics, and biology of gas/liquid, liquid/liquid, liquid/solid, gas/solid, and solid/solid interfaces at the molecular level. In this abbreviated article only liquid interfaces will be considered; gas/solid and solid/solid interfaces are not included. This restriction is necessary because of the enormous increase in SH and SF studies in recent years, which makes it extremely difficult to properly discuss the range of work being carried out around the world. Liquid interfaces probed by second-harmonic and sum-frequency spectroscopy

Aqueous surfaces and interfaces are important in many physical, chemical, and biological processes in our world. The adsorption, dissolution, and reaction of atmospheric gases at the surfaces of atmospheric aerosols and oceanic waters play a key role in the composition of our atmosphere and the sustainability of plant and animal species in land waters. The transport and exchange of ions and solutes across the interface between an aqueous phase and hydrophobic biomolecular assemblies underlies some of the most important processes in living plants and animals. Membrane formation, protein folding, and micelle formation all involve, and are often controlled by, bonding interactions with water molecules at their surfaces. The unique physical, chemical, and biological properties of aqueous surfaces arise from the strong hydrogen bonding that occurs between water molecules and the asymmetry in this otherwise tetrahedral bonding coordination that results from the termination of the bulk water phase. Although there has been increased experimental and theoretical effort in recent years focused on developing a molecular picture of the structure and bonding of water layers to other solid, liquid, and gaseous media, consensus on the details of interfacial bonding has been slow or nonexistent in many areas. The adsorption of ions, surfactants, and solute molecules at these interfaces adds a level of complexity to the Geraldine Richmond holds the Richard M. and Patricia H. Noyes Professor of Chemistry position at the University of Oregon. She received her Ph.D. degree under the mentorship of George Pimentel at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1980. From 1980 to 1985 she was on the faculty at Bryn Mawr College and moved to the University of Oregon in 1985 as an associate professor. Richmond is recognized for her fundamental studies of the structure, dynamics, and bonding characteristics of surfaces and interfaces. Her research group uses a combination of linear and nonlinear optical methods, thermodynamic measurements, and theory to characterize interactions at aqueous surfaces, metal and semiconductor surfaces in contact with liquids and adsorbates, and liquid/liquid interfaces. Richmond has received several recent honors for these studies including the 2002 ACS Spectrochemical Analysis Award, the 2001 Oregon Scientist of the Year, and the 1996 Olin-Garvan Medal of the ACS and has been a Fellow of the American Physical Society since 1993. 2693 Chem. Molecular bonding and interactions at aqueous surfaces as probed by vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy.

Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy permits vibrational imaging with high-sensitivity, high speed, and three-dimensional spatial resolution. We review recent advances in CARS microscopy, including experimental design, theoretical understanding of contrast mechanisms, and applications to chemical and biological systems. We also review the development of multiplex CARS microspectroscopy, which allows high-speed characterization of microscopic samples, and CARS correlation spectroscopy, which probes fast diffusion dynamics with vibrational selectivity.

Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering Microscopy: Instrumentation, Theory, and Applications

New spectroscopy of water using tunable picosecond pulses in the infrared.

Internal, hydrogen bonded OH groups of ethanol oligomers (solvent CCl4) are vibrationally excited by intense picosecond pulses at 3320 cm−1. The transient band shape observed in the OH stretching region (3000 to 3700 cm−1) is monitored by an independently tunable picosecond infrared pulse. The bands in this region are direct probes of hydrogen bridges. The time dependent growth and decay of these bands provides strong evidence for rapid bond breaking with a vibrational predissociation time of ≊5 ps, and for partial reassociation with a time constant of ≊20 ps.

Ultrafast dynamics of hydrogen bonds directly observed by time‐resolved infrared spectroscopy

Using intense ultrashort excitation pulses in the infrared (IR) tuned to the CH or oligomeric OH absorption bands of ethanol dissolved in CCl4, vibrational predissociation and partial reassociation of hydrogen bonds are observed on the picosecond time scale. Induced absorption at the OH stretching frequency 3500 cm−1 of proton donor end groups serves as a spectroscopic probe of the broken H bridges and is studied as a function of time by the help of delayed, tunable interrogation pulses. Different values for the effective dissociation rates and total quantum yields provide strong evidence for mode specifity of the IR photodissociation in the liquid at ambient temperature. The experimental results on vibrational population decay and energy transfer rates suggest a V–V transfer mechanism for CH to OH modes for the vibrational predissociation after CH excitation.
