The stability of two-dimensional (2D) layers and membranes is subject of a long standing theoretical debate. According to the so called Mermin-Wagner theorem, long wavelength fluctuations destroy the long-range order for 2D crystals. Similarly, 2D membranes embedded in a 3D space have a tendency to be crumpled. These dangerous fluctuations can, however, be suppressed by anharmonic coupling between bending and stretching modes making that a two-dimensional membrane can exist but should present strong height fluctuations. The discovery of graphene, the first truly 2D crystal and the recent experimental observation of ripples in freely hanging graphene makes these issues especially important. Beside the academic interest, understanding the mechanisms of stability of graphene is crucial for understanding electronic transport in this material that is attracting so much interest for its unusual Dirac spectrum and electronic properties. Here we address the nature of these height fluctuations by means of straightforward atomistic Monte Carlo simulations based on a very accurate many-body interatomic potential for carbon. We find that ripples spontaneously appear due to thermal fluctuations with a size distribution peaked around 70 \AA which is compatible with experimental findings (50-100 \AA) but not with the current understanding of stability of flexible membranes. This unexpected result seems to be due to the multiplicity of chemical bonding in carbon.

Intrinsic ripples in graphene

During the resorbable-polymer-boom of the 1970s and 1980s, polycaprolactone (PCL) was used in the biomaterials field and a number of drug-delivery devices. Its popularity was soon superseded by faster resorbable polymers which had fewer perceived disadvantages associated with long term degradation (up to 3-4 years) and intracellular resorption pathways; consequently, PCL was almost forgotten for most of two decades. Recently, a resurgence of interest has propelled PCL back into the biomaterials-arena. The superior rheological and viscoelastic properties over many of its aliphatic polyester counterparts renders PCL easy to manufacture and manipulate into a large range of implants and devices. Coupled with relatively inexpensive production routes and FDA approval, this provides a promising platform for the production of longer-term degradable implants which may be manipulated physically, chemically and biologically to possess tailorable degradation kinetics to suit a specific anatomical site. This review will discuss the application of PCL as a biomaterial over the last two decades focusing on the advantages which have propagated its return into the spotlight with a particular focus on medical devices, drug delivery and tissue engineering.

The return of a forgotten polymer : Polycaprolactone in the 21st century

The intriguing properties of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDCs) have led to a significant body of fundamental research and rapid uptake of these materials in many applications. Specifically, 2D TMDCs have shown great potential in biological systems due to their tunable electronic characteristics, unique optical properties, stability in aqueous environments, large surface area that can be manipulated and functionalized as well as an intercalatable layered structure, and low levels of toxicity. Here, the characteristics and use of 2D TMDCs for biological applications are reviewed and future possibilities for these materials in biological systems are outlined.

Magnetic field and nano-scaffolds with stem cells to enhance bone regeneration.

In this study, we have developed a combined approach to accelerate the proliferation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in vitro, using a new nanofibrous scaffold made by needleless electrospinning from a mixture of poly-e-caprolactone and magnetic particles. The biological characteristics of porcine MSCs were investigated while cultured in vitro on composite scaffold enriched with magnetic nanoparticles. Our data indicate that due to the synergic effect of the poly-e-caprolactone nanofibers and magnetic particles, cellular adhesion and proliferation of MSCs is enhanced and osteogenic differentiation is supported. The cellular and physical attributes make this new scaffold very promising for the acceleration of efficient MSC proliferation and regeneration of hard tissues.

Highly efficient mesenchymal stem cell proliferation on poly-ε-caprolactone nanofibers with embedded magnetic nanoparticles

The CoCr2O4 nanoparticles were prepared by hydrothermal treatment of chromium and cobalt oleates in a mixture of solvents (water and ethanol or pentanol) at various temperatures. The samples were further annealed at the temperatures from 300 to 500 °C. The obtained nanoparticles were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Raman and infrared spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. The particle size, ranging from 4.4 to 11.5 nm, was determined from the TEM and PXRD methods. The tendency of particles to form the aggregates with the increasing annealing temperature has been observed. The magnetic measurements revealed that the typical features of the CoCr2O4 long-range magnetic order are suppressed in the nanoparticles.
