The present review article provides an overview of the properties of various natural and synthetic fibers for the fabrication of pure natural composites and the combination of both natural/synthetic fibers-based hybrid composites, bio-based resins, various fabrication techniques, chemical and mechanical properties of fibers, the effect of chemical treatment and the influence of nanoparticles on the composite materials. Natural fibers are becoming more popular and attractive to researchers, with satisfactory results, due to their availability, ease of fabrication, cost-effectiveness, biodegradable nature and being environmentally friendly. Hybrid composites made up of two different natural fibers under the same matrix material are more popular than a combination of natural and synthetic fibers. Recent studies relevant to natural fiber hybrid composites have stated that, due to their biodegradability and the strength of individual fibers causing an impact on mechanical properties, flame retardancy and moisture absorption, natural fibers need an additional treatment like chemical treatment for the fibers to overcome those drawbacks and to enhance their better properties. The result of chemical treatment on composite material properties such as thermal, mechanical and moisture properties was studied. Researchers found that the positive influence on overall strength by placing the filler materials (nanoparticles) in the composite materials. Hybrid composites are one of the fields in polymer science that are attracting consideration for various lightweight applications in a wide range of industries such as automobile, construction, shipping, aviation, sports equipment, electronics, hardware and biomedical sectors.

Review of Hybrid Fiber Based Composites with Nano Particles-Material Properties and Applications.

Bio-based composites are reinforced polymeric materials in which one of the matrix and reinforcement components or both are from bio-based origins. The biocomposite industry has recently drawn great attention for diverse applications, from household articles to automobiles. This is owing to their low cost, biodegradability, being lightweight, availability, and environmental concerns over synthetic and nonrenewable materials derived from limited resources like fossil fuel. The focus has slowly shifted from traditional biocomposite systems, including thermoplastic polymers reinforced with natural fibers, to more advanced systems called hybrid biocomposites. Hybridization of bio-based fibers/matrices and synthetic ones offers a new strategy to overcome the shortcomings of purely natural fibers or matrices. By incorporating two or more reinforcement types into a single composite, it is possible to not only maintain the advantages of both types but also alleviate some disadvantages of one type of reinforcement by another one. This approach leads to improvement of the mechanical and physical properties of biocomposites for extensive applications. The present review article intends to provide a general overview of selecting the materials to manufacture hybrid biocomposite systems with improved strength properties, water, and burning resistance in recent years.

With emerging focus on sustainable product development researchers are now focusing on consumption of Natural Fibres (NF) directly or as reinforcement materials in polymer based materials. Natural fibers are being used since ages but in recent decades there exist a need to explore the properties of these fibres for varied applications subject to the requirement. Natural Fibre Reinforced Polymers (NFRP) are utilized in manufacturing several automotive, marine and aerospace low level structural applications. In order to use natural fibres in high level structural applications, it is necessary to understand the structural, mechanical and thermal properties of the fibre. But as the natural fibre are obtained in irregular size and shapes in their longitudinal direction and cross section its quite difficult to study their properties unlike advanced composites. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of Natural Fibres (NF) distress the bonding interaction between the fibre and matrix. This chapter tries to analyse the different characteristics with respect to the application of Natural Fibers (NF) for real time applications and attempts to provide an insight for researchers and design engineers to understand the requirements of utilizing Natural Fibres Composites (NFC) for construction applications in future. This chapter also summarize the advantages of natural fibres on their bio degradability aspects.
