A review was presented to demonstrate a historical description of the synthesis of light-emitting conjugated polymers for applications in electroluminescent devices. Electroluminescence (EL) was first reported in poly(para-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) in 1990 and researchers continued to make significant efforts to develop conjugated materials as the active units in light-emitting devices (LED) to be used in display applications. Conjugated oligomers were used as luminescent materials and as models for conjugated polymers in the review. Oligomers were used to demonstrate a structure and property relationship to determine a key polymer property or to demonstrate a technique that was to be applied to polymers. The review focused on demonstrating the way polymer structures were made and the way their properties were controlled by intelligent and rational and synthetic design.

Synthesis of Light-Emitting Conjugated Polymers for Applications in Electroluminescent Devices

Recent advances in olefin metathesis and its application in organic synthesis

This article provides a review about electroluminescence from organic materials and deals in detail with organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), light-emitting electro-chemical cells (LECs) and electrogenerated chemilumi-nescence (ECL) reflecting different electrooptical appli-cations of conjugated materials. It is written from an organic chemist's point of view and pays particular attention to the development of organic materials involved in corresponding devices. In recent years a substantial amount of both academic and industrial research has been directed to organic electroluminescence in an effort to improve the processability and tunability of organic materials and the longevity of OLEDs and LECs. On the eve of the commercialization of organic electrolumi-nescence this review provides an overview of lifetimes and efficiencies attained and reflects materials and device concepts developed over the last decade. In this context electrogenerated chemiluminescence is discussed with respect to its importance as a versatile tool to simulate the fundamental electrochemical processes in OLEDs.

Color Control in π-Conjugated Organic Polymers for Use in Electrochromic Devices

Molecular imprinting technology (MIT) concerns formation of selective sites in a polymer matrix with the memory of a template. Recently, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have aroused extensive attention and been widely applied in many fields, such as solid-phase extraction, chemical sensors and artificial antibodies owing to their desired selectivity, physical robustness, thermal stability, as well as low cost and easy preparation. With the rapid development of MIT as a research hotspot, it faces a number of challenges, involving biological macromolecule imprinting, heterogeneous binding sites, template leakage, incompatibility with aqueous media, low binding capacity and slow mass transfer, which restricts its applications in various aspects. This critical review briefly reviews the current status of MIT, particular emphasis on significant progresses of novel imprinting methods, some challenges and effective strategies for MIT, and highlighted applications of MIPs. Finally, some significant attempts in further developing MIT are also proposed (236 references).

Recent advances in molecular imprinting technology: current status, challenges and highlighted applications

Summary: Carbazole-based oligomeric and polymeric materials have been studied for almost 25 years for their unique electrical, electrochemical and optical properties. Interestingly, carbazole units can be linked in two different ways leading to either poly(3,6-carbazole) or poly(2,7-carbazole) derivatives. While the former class seems to be very interesting for electrochemical and phosphorescence applications, the latter shows very promising optical properties in the visible range for light emitting diodes (LED). The major intrinsic difference between these two classes is the effective conjugation length: poly(2,7-carbazole) materials having the longer one, due to their poly(p-phenylene)-like structure. Using different synthetic strategies and substitution patterns, the physico-chemical properties of both classes can be fine-tuned, leading to high performance materials for a large number electronic applications.

The role of carbazole in organic light-emitting devices

Charge injection into an organic semiconductor can be improved by using a self-assembled monolayer of functionalized molecules grafted on the electrode. This new interface can be designed in order to reduce the Schottky barrier between the conductive electrode and the organic semiconductor. The polarizability of the molecules involved can also be chosen in order to increase the adhesion of the molecular semiconductor onto the electrode. We present Kelvin Probe experiments and saturated photovoltage measurements performed on a number of such derivatized electrodes. They permit a quantitative description of the potential shifts due to the self-assembled monolayers which are related to the electrical dipoles of the individual molecules constituting them. When conjugated sites contributing to the band states of the organic semiconductor are placed too close to the electrode in the negative part of the image-force potential, two new effects unfavorable to charge injection can appear. We demonstrate that it is convenient to separate the attachment group of the molecule from the conjugated core by a spacer of non-conjugated sites in order to reduce these undesirable effects.
