Tidal amplitude and fish abundance in the mouth region of a small estuary
Alistair Becker,Alan K. Whitfield,Paul D. Cowley,Victoria J. Cole,Victoria J. Cole,Matthew D. Taylor +5 more
TL;DR: The number of fishes passing the camera was significantly greater during the smaller neap tides, and schooling behaviour was more pronounced for fishes that were travelling into the estuary compared to fishes swimming towards the ocean.
Journal ArticleDOI
Increased abundance of two important sport fishery species following renewed river flow into a freshwater-deprived South African estuary
Journal ArticleDOI
Larval development of Gilchristella aestuaria (Gilchrist, 1914) (Pisces: Clupeidae) from southern Africa
E.H. Haigh,Alan K. Whitfield +1 more
TL;DR: The larval development ol the southern African endemic clupeid Gilchristella aestuaria is described and illustrated from specimens collected in the Swartvlei and Sundays estuarine systems of the Ca...

Predation by introduced largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides on indigenous marine fish in the lower Kowie River, South Africa
TL;DR: The study highlights the need for careful consideration prior to the introduction of predatory alien fish into South African waterbodies in future, and suggests that future introductions should take into account their possible impacts on indigenous marine fish, especially those species that migrate between estuarine and freshwater ecosystems as juveniles.
Journal ArticleDOI
High flow variability and storm events shape the ecology of the Mbhashe Estuary, South Africa
Nicola C. James,Janine B. Adams,AD Connell,Stephen J. Lamberth,CF MacKay,GC Snow,L van Niekerk,Alan K. Whitfield +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the possible impacts of extreme events on the ecology of selected aquatic biota within the Mbhashe Estuary were investigated during a four year (2010-2013) spring sampling program.
