Journal ArticleDOI
Complement and the damaging effects of cardiopulmonary bypass
James K. Kirklin,Stephen Westaby,Eugene H. Blackstone,John W. Kirklin,Dennis E. Chenoweth,Albert D. Pacifico +5 more
TL;DR: The damaging effects of CPB are demonstrated, relates them in part to complement activation by the foreign surfaces encountered by the blood, and supports the hypothesis that the mechanisms of the damaging effects include a whole-body inflammatory reaction.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Fontan operation. Ventricular hypertrophy, age, and date of operation as risk factors.
TL;DR: hypertrophy of the ventricular main chamber was a risk factor for death in both the early and late phases of hazard, which explained in part the lesser risk of the Fontan operation in patients with tricuspid atresia.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Randomized, Controlled Trial of Very Early Prophylactic Ligation of the Ductus Arteriosus in Babies Who Weighed 1000 g or Less at Birth
George Cassady,Dennis T. Crouse,John W. Kirklin,Martha J. Strange,Clinton H. Joiner,Guillermo Godoy,Gregory T. Odrezin,Gary Cutter,James K. Kirklin,Albert D. Pacifico,Monica V. Collins,William A. Lell,Celia Satterwhite,Joseph B. Philips +13 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that early surgical closure of the ductus arteriosus reduces the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis in infants of very low birth weight who require supplemental oxygen.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long-term function of cryopreserved aortic homografts: A ten-year study
James K. Kirklin,Dennis Smith,William M. Novick,David C. Naftel,John W. Kirklin,Albert D. Pacifico,Navin C. Nanda,Frederick Helmcke,Robert C. Bourge +8 more
TL;DR: By multivariable analysis younger recipient age was the only risk factor identified for leaflet failure, and patients followed up for 4 or more years were in New York Heart Association class I or II.
Journal ArticleDOI
Usefulness of transesophageal echocardiography in assessment of aortic dissection.
Raj S. Ballal,Navin C. Nanda,Robert P. Gatewood,B D'Arcy,Tandaw E. Samdarshi,William L. Holman,James K. Kirklin,Albert D. Pacifico +7 more
TL;DR: Transesophageal echocardiography is very useful in the assessment of aortic dissection and was useful in detecting communications between the true and false lumens, presence of thrombi in the false lumen, and, in two patients, localized dissection rupture with formation of a false aneurysm.
