L-Band Passive and Active Microwave Geophysical Model Functions of Ocean Surface Winds and Applications to Aquarius Retrieval
Simon Yueh,Wenqing Tang,Alexander Fore,Gregory A. Neumann,Akiko Hayashi,Adam P. Freedman,Julian Chaubell,Gary Lagerloef +7 more
TL;DR: The L-band passive and active microwave geophysical model functions (GMFs) of ocean surface winds from the Aquarius data are derived and the validity of the GMFs is tested through application to wind and salinity retrieval from Aquarian data using the combined active-passive algorithm.
Journal ArticleDOI
Combined Active/Passive Retrievals of Ocean Vector Wind and Sea Surface Salinity With SMAP
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the CAP salinity and vector wind performance is superior to individual algorithms and provides wind vectors nearly as good as RapidScat for low-to-moderate winds and possibly superior to traditional scatterometers for wind speeds larger than 12.5 m/s.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sea surface salinity estimates from spaceborne L-band radiometers: An overview of the first decade of observation (2010–2019)
Nicolas Reul,Semyon A. Grodsky,Manuel Arias,Jacqueline Boutin,Rafael Catany,Bertrand Chapron,Francesco D'Amico,Emmanuel P. Dinnat,Craig Donlon,Alexander Fore,Severine Fournier,Sébastien Guimbard,Audrey Hasson,Nicolas Kolodziejczyk,Gary Lagerloef,Tong Lee,D.M. Le Vine,Eric Lindstrom,Christophe Maes,Susanne Mecklenburg,Thomas Meissner,Estrella Olmedo,Roberto Sabia,Joseph Tenerelli,Clovis Thouvenin-Masson,Antonio Turiel,Jean-Luc Vergely,Nadya T. Vinogradova,Frank J. Wentz,Simon Yueh +29 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide a historical review of satellite SSS remote sensing with passive L-band radiometry beginning with the discussions of measurement principles, technology, sensing characteristics and complementarities of the three aforementioned missions.
Journal ArticleDOI
UAVSAR Polarimetric Calibration
Alexander Fore,Bruce Chapman,Brian Hawkins,Scott Hensley,Cathleen E. Jones,Thierry Michel,Ronald J. Muellerschoen +6 more
TL;DR: It is shown that UAVSAR is a well-calibrated SAR system for polarimetric applications, with absolute radiometric calibration bias better than 1 dB, residual root-mean-square (RMS) errors of ~0.7 dB, and RMS phase errors ~5.3°.
Journal ArticleDOI
Passive and Active L-Band Microwave Observations and Modeling of Ocean Surface Winds
TL;DR: The data suggest the validity of Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) HH model function between 5 and 15 m/s wind speeds, but show that the extrapolation of PALSAR model at above 20 m/S wind speeds overpredicts A0 and a1 coefficients.
