We envision that smart mirrors comprising a combination of intelligent hardware and software could identify subtle, yet clinically relevant changes in physique and appearance. Similarly, a smart mirror could record and evaluate body position and motion to identify posture and movement issues, as well as offer feedback for corrective actions. Successful development and implementation of smart mirrors for healthcare applications will require overcoming new challenges in engineering, machine learning, computer vision, and biomedical research. This paper examines the potential uses of smart mirrors in healthcare and explores how this technology might benefit users in various medical environments. We also provide a brief description of the state-of-the-art, including a functional prototype concept developed by our group, and highlight the directions to make this device more mainstream in health-related applications.

Reflecting health: smart mirrors for personalized medicine.

This paper presents the design and implementation of a multi-user smart mirror system conceived to promote wellness and healthier lifestyles in the work environment through persuasive strategies. By means of a RFID reader, the interactive mirror recognises different users through their personal corporate ID card, which allows them to have access to their personalised user-interface. The smart mirror provides workplace's indoor environmental conditions (thermal, humidity and light), personal physical exercise data obtained from wearable devices and general purpose information (e.g. weather and daily news). Additionally, motivational advice related to physical performance is supplied through request by applying speech-based recognition techniques. End-users can also inquire the mirror about their ranking position in a fair-daily competition that gives social recognition to the most-active-user. The implemented mirror has been evaluated in a one-week study conducted in the wild in the workplace premises. The quantitative data gathered throughout the study, as well as the qualitative users' feedback obtained in a post-trial focus group, provided promising findings for the acceptance and convenience of such a persuasive device in the work environment. Furthermore, valuable design-insights were obtained for future iterations of the smart mirror that encourages workers towards healthier lifestyles.

SmiWork: An interactive smart mirror platform for workplace health promotion

This paper introduces a new form of real-time affective interface that engages the user in a process of conceptualisation of their emotional state. Inspired by Barrett's Theory of Constructed Emotion, `Mirror Ritual' aims to expand upon the user's accessible emotion concepts, and to ultimately provoke emotional reflection and regulation. The interface uses classified emotions -- obtained through facial expression recognition -- as a basis for dynamically generating poetry. The perceived emotion is used to seed a poetry generation system based on OpenAI's GPT-2 model, fine-tuned on a specially curated corpus. We evaluate the device's ability to foster a personalised, meaningful experience for individual users over a sustained period. A qualitative analysis revealed that participants were able to affectively engage with the mirror, with each participant developing a unique interpretation of its poetry in the context of their own emotional landscape.

Mirror Ritual: An Affective Interface for Emotional Self-Reflection

Today there exist many different types of smart assistants and devices, such as virtual assistants, smartphones and wearables, which have a purpose to coordinate and optimize the daily activities of the people worldwide. The smart assistants' focus is mainly on basic human needs, e.g. browsing, scheduling, navigating and other similar activities. However, not many smart assistants are concerned with the human health overall. In this paper, we focus on the possibility of using a smart mirror to detect health issues. A new Smart eHealth Mirror model is proposed, that consists of a smart mirror which works on its own algorithm and behaves as smart assistant. This proposed model uses face recognition authentication, posture problem detection, and proper posture guidance, followed with suggestions for preventive healthcare. The algorithm identifies the person's posture and carefully analyses the posture and body changes over time. The obtained results from the analysis satisfied our expectations by improving the upright posture of the tested individual by considerable rate. The benefit of the proposed smart algorithm is proven by the evaluation results, which improved with each new individual analysis.

This paper will discuss the concept of a smart mirror for healthier living, the FitMirror. Many people have serious problems to get up after sleeping, to get motivated for the day, or are tired and in a bad mood in the morning. The goal of FitMirror is to positively affect the user's feelings by increasing his/her motivation, mood and feeling of fitness. While concepts for these isolated problems exist, none of these combine them into one system. FitMirror is implemented to combine them and evaluate them in a study. It consists of a monitor with spy-foil, a Microsoft Kinect v2 and a Wii Balance Board and can recognize users and their gestures with these elements. Several hypotheses about the system regarding motivation, fun, difficulty and getting awake were investigated. Participants were grouped by the factors sportspersons and morning persons to investigate the effect based on these aspects. Results show that FitMirror can help users get awake in the morning, raise their motivation to do sports and motivate them for the day.
