Plasma levels of trimethylamine-N-oxide are confounded by impaired kidney function and poor metabolic control
Daniel M. Mueller,Martina Allenspach,Alaa Othman,Alaa Othman,Christoph H. Saely,Axel Muendlein,Alexander Vonbank,Heinz Drexel,Arnold von Eckardstein +8 more
TL;DR: Plasma levels of TMAO are confounded by impaired kidney function and poor metabolic control but are not associated with the history, presence or incidence of symptoms or events of coronary heart disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms of TCF7L2 Are Linked to Diabetic Coronary Atherosclerosis
Axel Muendlein,Christoph H. Saely,Simone Geller-Rhomberg,Gudrun Sonderegger,Philipp Rein,Thomas Winder,Stefan Beer,Alexander Vonbank,Heinz Drexel +8 more
TL;DR: These results suggest that TCF7L2 variants rs7903146 rs12255372, and rs11196205 are significantly associated with angiographically diagnosed CAD, specifically in patients with T2DM, and appears as a genetic link between diabetes and atherosclerosis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Plasma 1-deoxysphingolipids are predictive biomarkers for type 2 diabetes mellitus
Alaa Othman,Christoph H. Saely,Axel Muendlein,Alexander Vonbank,Heinz Drexel,Arnold von Eckardstein,Thorsten Hornemann +6 more
TL;DR: A novel role for 1-deoxysphingolipids (1-deoxySLs) as predictive biomarkers for the development of T2DM in risk patients is supported and warrants further larger prospective trials in lower risk cohorts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comprehensive efforts to increase adherence to statin therapy
Alexander Vonbank,Stefan Agewall,Keld Kjeldsen,Keld Kjeldsen,Basil S. Lewis,Christian Torp-Pedersen,Claudio Ceconi,Christian Funck-Brentano,Juan Carlos Kaski,Alexander Niessner,Juan Tamargo,Thomas Walther,Thomas Walther,Sven Wassmann,Giuseppe M.C. Rosano,Harald H.H.W. Schmidt,Christoph H. Saely,Heinz Drexel +17 more
TL;DR: The position that statin therapy is underutilized because of non-adherence not solely related to statin side effects is taken and steps to be taken in cardiovascular practice to improve statin adherence and thus cardiovascular outcomes are proposed.
