Titanium Dioxide Nanomaterials: Synthesis, Properties, Modifications, and Applications

The advantages in using nanoscale materials for electrochemical energy storage are generally attributed to short diffusion path lengths for both electronic and lithium ion transport. Here, we consider another contribution, namely the charge storage from faradaic processes occurring at the surface, referred to as pseudocapacitive effect. This paper describes the synthesis and pseudocapacitive characteristics of block copolymer templated anatase TiO2 thin films synthesized using either sol−gel reagents or preformed nanocrystals as building blocks. Both materials are highly crystalline and have large surface areas; however, the structure of the porosity is not identical. Templated Nanocrystal-Based Porous TiO2 Films for Next-Generation Electrochemical Capacitors

This review presents an extensive discussion on the major advances in the field of periodically organized mesoporous thin films (POMTFs) obtained via surfactant templated growth of inorganic or hybrid polymers. A large variety of templating agents can be coupled with inorganic polymerization reactions for the design of periodically organized nanostructured hybrid phases that yield POMTFs. The tuning of the interface between the template and the polymerizing phase and the control over chemical and processing conditions are the key parameters in producing tailor-made POMTFs with a high degree of reproducibility. This dynamic coupling between chemical and processing conditions dictates extensive use of complementary ex situ measurements with in situ characterization techniques that follow, in real time, film formation from the molecular precursor solutions to the final stabilized POMTF. Design, Synthesis, and Properties of Inorganic and Hybrid Thin Films Having Periodically Organized Nanoporosity†

Semiconducting metal oxides are frequently used as gas-sensing materials. Apart from large surface-to-volume ratios, well-defined and uniform pore structures are particularly desired for improved sensing performance. This article addresses the role of some key structural aspects in porous gas sensors, such as grain size and agglomeration, pore size or crack-free film morphology. New synthesis concepts, for example, the utilisation of rigid matrices for structure replication, allow to control these parameters independently, providing the opportunity to create self-diagnostic sensors with enhanced sensitivity and reproducible selectivity.

Porous Metal Oxides as Gas Sensors

Due to the increasingly polluted environment and the gradual depletion of fossil fuel reserves, the development of renewable technologies for environmental remediation and energy production is highly desirable. Over the past decades, oxide-based semiconductor photocatalysis has attracted much attention. On various frontiers for efficient photocatalysis, surface-tuning strategies for synthesis and modification of oxides on the nanometer scale have progressed at a fast pace. Hence, it is of significance to review recent advances in the development of surface tuning for oxide-based nanomaterials as activity-enhanced photocatalysts. In this review, special emphases, especially for recent advances in our group, are given to surface tuning of novel nanocrystallites for high thermal stability, hierarchical structure assembly, heterojunctional nanocomposites and high-energy-facet exposure, along with effective testing tools for photogenerated charge properties at the surfaces and/or interfaces. This is of great significance for fields related to energy and environment from scientific and engineering viewpoints.

Surface Tuning for Oxide-Based Nanomaterials as Efficient Photocatalysts

TiO2 optical thin films stable to 700 °C, exhibiting 35% volume porosity, more than 100 m2·g-1 in surface area, fully nanocrystalline anatase framework, and organized mesostructure (cubic Im3m derived), have been stabilized by careful delayed rapid crystallization (DRC) thermal treatments. In-situ time-resolved SAXS and WAXS investigations were simultaneously performed during such treatments. They revealed that a slow and progressive heating to a temperature just below that of the formation of anatase (Tc ≈ 400 °C), followed by a long pretreatment at this temperature, stabilizes the amorphous network. A following rapid increase of temperature up to temperatures as high as typically 700 °C, followed by a short residence time at this high temperature, provokes the homogeneous formation of crystalline small nanoparticles and the total elimination of organic residues.
