Purpose: this study aimed to analyze significant effects of language activities on elderly people´s autonomy and social participation. Methods: it is an intervention research report, based on a dialogical discourse perspective, developed in two stages. In the first, a speech-language intervention involving written and oral practices about life stories was carried out with six elderly participants. In the second, a semi-structured interview was applied with these participants based on questions that addressed the aims of the study. Results: the participants were all females, aged between 61 and 90 years old. Their statements indicated that, through dialogical practices, they were able to increase their social participation, autonomy and self-esteem; they were also able to deconstruct stigmatizing social standards imposed to elderly people. Final Considerations: dialogical practices among the elderly can help promote active aging and overcome negative conceptions about elderly people, as proposed by the World Health Organization and the National Health Care Policy for the Elderly, which confirm that elderly people contribute to social development.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar a percepcao dos idosos sobre seu processo de comunicacao no envelhecimento. Metodos Estudo qualitativo, com base na metodologia pesquisa-acao-participante, desenvolvido por meio do Itinerario de pesquisa de Paulo Freire, que consiste de tres etapas dialeticas: investigacao tematica; codificacao e descodificacao e desvelamento critico. O estudo desenvolveu-se em quatro Circulos de Cultura, no periodo de junho a julho de 2017, incluindo a participacao de dez idosos de uma universidade aberta da terceira idade. Resultados A partir do dialogo, foram enunciadas tematicas que envolveram o desvelamento das tecnologias e seu impacto na comunicacao dos idosos. Destacaram-se a fragilidade dos participantes, em relacao aos avancos das Tecnologias da Informacao e Comunicacao, e a dificuldade apresentada por este publico nos processos interativos, principalmente relacionados a familia, decorrentes do uso em grande escala destas ferramentas. Conclusao Nao foram mencionados, pelos participantes, aspectos patologicos, ou em relacao as perdas funcionais do processo de envelhecimento, mas o interesse em dialogar sobre as tecnologias de informacao de comunicacao. O estudo representou a percepcao dos participantes nos Circulos de Cultura, evidenciando a relevância de metodologias, como a de Paulo Freire, na discussao de temas que tangem o cotidiano das pessoas, contribuindo para um processo reflexivo que busca a melhora da qualidade de vida.

A percepção do idoso sobre a comunicação no processo de envelhecimento

Objective. This study aimed to identify and compare the social representations of aging built by seniorparticipants of cohabiting groups for the elderly (G1) and non-participant elderly (G2). Method. The participation of 60 elders was equally distributed by gender. A socio-demographic questionnaire, the Free Word Association Technique (FAWT), and a semi-structured interview were all applied. The data collected by the FAWT were analyzed by the technique of semantic networks, while the interviews were investigated by IRaMuTeQ software. Results. Overall, it was found that the elderly in cohabitation groups characterized aging with positive aspects, associating it with health and physical activities while those who did not participate associated it with negative aspects related to disease, loss and decline.

Análise psicossocial do envelhecimento entre idosos: as suas representações sociais

This article presents the intergenerational education to reduce stereotypes and negative attitudes based on age and relationships among generations. After the theoretical contextualization, the results of a qualitative research carried out through interviews applied to 20 people of different ages of the parish of Bonfim from Porto are presented. The main obtained results are: the contact among the different generations is very low; there are more negative stereotypes than positive ones in relation to the generation of older adults and young people, and that these stereotypes, in addition to the different perspectives that young and older adults have about values, result in negative attitudes of a generation toward the other. After interpreting and discussing the results, the article ends with an illustration of how to use these results in what we consider one of the best ways to develop intergenerational education processes.

Purpose: to analyze the impact that intergenerational dialogic activities can have on the perception that children and adolescents have about the elderly and vice-versa Methods: the participants were twelve elderly people and twenty-one children and adolescents interested in developing intergenerational dialogic activities For eight months, they attended weekly joint activities organized around oral dialogical activities of reading and writing, involving the relationship between generations At the end of this period, semi-structured interviews were carried out with the subjects to verify the impact of the activities on them Results: responses were organized and interpreted according to the methodological proposal of the Content Analysis, resulting in the formulation of seven categories These categories showed a less discriminatory view of the participants, facing the opposite generation Conclusion: in regard to the elderly, the activities reminded them of the past and reframed the present, expanding their self-perception, and strengthening the intergenerational ties Children and adolescents, in turn, recognized the need to overcome negative stereotypes about old age and realized the learning opportunities that may arise through the interaction with the elderly
