This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. There are two kinds of tutorial articles: those that provide a primer on an established topic and those that let us in on the ground floor of something of emerging importance. The first type of tutorial can have a noted expert who has been gracious (and brave) enough to write a field guide about a particular topic. The other sort of tutorial typically involves researchers who have each been laboring on a topic for some years. Both sorts of tutorial articles are very much desired. But we, as an editorial board for both Systems and Transactions, know that there has been no logical place for them in the AESS until this series was started several years ago. With these tutorials, we hope to continue to give them a home, a welcome, and provide a service to our membership. We do not intend to publish tutorials on a regular basis, but we hope to deliver them once or twice per year. We need and welcome good, useful tutorial articles (both kinds) in relevant AESS areas. If you, the reader, can offer a topic of interest and an author to write about it, please contact us. Self-nominations are welcome, and even more ideal is a suggestion of an article that the editor(s) can solicit. All articles will be reviewed in detail. Criteria on which they will be judged include their clarity of presentation, relevance, and likely audience, and, of course, their correctness and scientific merit. As to the mathematical level, the articles in this issue are a good guide: in each case the author has striven to explain complicated topics in simple-well, tutorial-terms. There should be no (or very little) novel material: the home for archival science is the Transactions Magazine, and submissions that need to be properly peer reviewed would be rerouted there. Likewise, articles that are interesting and descriptive, but lack significant tutorial content, ought more properly be submitted to the Systems Magazine.

Minimal intervention dentistry for managing dental caries - a review: report of a FDI task group.

An adequate dentition is of importance for well-being and life quality. Despite advances in preventive dentistry, edentulism is still a major public health problem worldwide. In this narrative review, we provide a perspective on the pathways that link oral to general health. A better understanding of disease indicators is necessary for establishing a solid strategy through an organized oral health care system to prevent and treat this morbid chronic condition.

The Impact of Edentulism on Oral and General Health

Aim: The authors assessed the role of Paulo de Tarso Beneficient Association nursery team referring to oral/prosthesis hygiene practices. They also evaluate the factors involved when the nurse team didn´t perform their role in dependent patients. Material and methods: The data were obtained by means of a previous tested questionnaire submitted to all employees. The data was submitted to descriptive analysis and compared by Pearson square qui test. Results: The range of ages of people in the study varied from 21 to 56 years, most of them women (72.2%). 83.3% of people who answered the questionnaire had studied for 12 years, 48.1% had worked for at least 5 years and 61.1% worked only in this institution., most – 57.4%- during daily hours. Those workers took care of at least 7 dependent patients – 74.1% - or more than 7- 25.9% of them. 92.6% of those who answered the questionnaire had knowledge of oral hygiene/prosthesis. 83.3% had knowledge of prosthesis. In spite of this, 51.9% answered they did not perform this type of task. Conclusions:  We concluded that when the workers took care of more than 7 patients and had to work in night shifts they couldn´t perform oral hygiene/prosthesis adequately.

A neglected lower impacted premolar leading to cervical necrotizing faciitis

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the clinical success rate of implant-supported complete dental prostheses, which are being used as a feasible alternative in planning of oral rehabilitation. Over the years, the two-stage surgical protocol has increasingly been replaced by immediate loading procedures, especially in the mandibular anterior region in cases of rehabilitation of completely edentulous patients. This procedure has become feasible due to the high success rate of the technique with very satisfactory results.METHODS: By means of a literature review focused on published articles with clinical follow-up between 8 and 15 years.RESULTS: Implants placed in the mandible had higher success rates than those inserted in the maxilla. Cases with longer follow-up periods, 15 years, showed higher success rates in comparison with follow-up periods of 8 and 10 years.CONCLUSION: Success rates of implant-supported complete dental prostheses are very high.

Review of follow-up of clinical success of implant-supported complete dental prostheses

OBJECTIVE The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the experience of dental caries in individuals pre- or postliver transplant. MATERIALS AND METHODS Searches in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Ovid, and Lilacs from databases' inception date up to April 2020 were undertaken. Gray literature and manual searches were also conducted. Observational studies were eligible. The retrieved references were evaluated by two independent reviewers. Meta-analysis and risk of bias assessment using the University of Adelaide tool were conducted. The strength of the evidence was assessed with GRADE. RESULTS The search retrieved 1990 references. Twenty-four cross-sectional studies were included. One subgroup analysis demonstrated no significant difference in the number of teeth with dental caries between pre-liver transplant and healthy individuals (mean difference = 1.65, confidence interval = -0.87 to 4.17). The prevalence of dental caries among pre-liver transplant individuals was 73.82% and in the post-transplant individuals was 72.83%. In the included studies, the main concern regarding risk of bias was the absence of control for confounding variables. The strength of the evidence was very low. CONCLUSIONS Dental caries may be a relevant issue in pre- and postliver transplant individuals. Oral health counseling should be included in the care of pre- and/or postliver transplant individuals.
