This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. There are two kinds of tutorial articles: those that provide a primer on an established topic and those that let us in on the ground floor of something of emerging importance. The first type of tutorial can have a noted expert who has been gracious (and brave) enough to write a field guide about a particular topic. The other sort of tutorial typically involves researchers who have each been laboring on a topic for some years. Both sorts of tutorial articles are very much desired. But we, as an editorial board for both Systems and Transactions, know that there has been no logical place for them in the AESS until this series was started several years ago. With these tutorials, we hope to continue to give them a home, a welcome, and provide a service to our membership. We do not intend to publish tutorials on a regular basis, but we hope to deliver them once or twice per year. We need and welcome good, useful tutorial articles (both kinds) in relevant AESS areas. If you, the reader, can offer a topic of interest and an author to write about it, please contact us. Self-nominations are welcome, and even more ideal is a suggestion of an article that the editor(s) can solicit. All articles will be reviewed in detail. Criteria on which they will be judged include their clarity of presentation, relevance, and likely audience, and, of course, their correctness and scientific merit. As to the mathematical level, the articles in this issue are a good guide: in each case the author has striven to explain complicated topics in simple-well, tutorial-terms. There should be no (or very little) novel material: the home for archival science is the Transactions Magazine, and submissions that need to be properly peer reviewed would be rerouted there. Likewise, articles that are interesting and descriptive, but lack significant tutorial content, ought more properly be submitted to the Systems Magazine.

Minimal intervention dentistry for managing dental caries - a review: report of a FDI task group.

An adequate dentition is of importance for well-being and life quality. Despite advances in preventive dentistry, edentulism is still a major public health problem worldwide. In this narrative review, we provide a perspective on the pathways that link oral to general health. A better understanding of disease indicators is necessary for establishing a solid strategy through an organized oral health care system to prevent and treat this morbid chronic condition.

Crown-root fracture is one of the most challenging fracture types in the dental traumatology literature. Traumatized anterior teeth require quick functional and esthetic repair. In the case of a complex crown fracture of the maxillary left central incisor, requiring endodontic treatment, a fiber-reinforced post was used to create a central support stump to restore the dental morphology. This report describes the clinical procedures involved in the treatment. After two years of follow-up, the clinical and radiographic findings demonstrated that the adopted clinical protocol was successful and yielded healthy periodontal tissues with no signs of periradicular pathology.

Conservative Treatment of a Complicated Crown-root Fracture Using Adhesive Fragment Reattachment and Composite Resin Restoration: Two Year Follow-up.

PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of human and bovine root dentin age on the bond strength of fiber posts fixed with resin cements. The degree of conversion (DC) of the resin cements in different root thirds also was evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ninety-six single-rooted teeth were divided into groups according to the origin and age: young human (20-30 years), old human (over 60 years), young bovine (24-36 months) and adult bovine (over 48 months). The teeth were endodontically treated, and fiber posts were cemented with resin cements (RelyX Ultimate and RelyX U200). After 24 h, the teeth were sectioned perpendicularly and the push-out test was performed in a universal testing machine at a speed of 0.5 mm/min, until failure. One specimen from each third from each group (n = 6) was selected, and the DC of the resin cements was analyzed by FT-Raman spectroscopy. RESULTS For both resin cements, the young human root dentin group presented the highest bond strengths and the old human root dentin group presented the lowest (p 0.05). For the DC of resin cements, there were differences among the root thirds (p < 0.05), with the lowest values observed in the apical third. CONCLUSIONS The bond strengths were higher in the young human root canal than in the bovine substrate, with a negative effect of aging in the human substrate. The DC of dual-curing resin cements decreased from the coronal to apical root thirds.

Bond Strength of Resin Cements Fixing Fiber Posts to Human and Bovine Teeth of Different Ages.

Bioglass films were prepared on Ti disks used for dental implants using very simple sol-gel synthesis and dip-coating process. The influence of annealing temperatures, 37 °C and 600 °C, on the surface morphology and chemical composition was investigated using SEM, AFM, DRIFT and XPS techniques. Biocompatible calcium phosphate phases were successfully formed when the disks were kept in contact with simulated biological fluid at three different immersion times: 7, 24 and 160 h. For the films annealed at 37 °C calcium phosphate was formed which was confirmed through the analysis of the intensity ratios of P-O, Ti-O-Ti and Si-O absorption bands in the DRIFT spectra. Ca/P and O/Ca surface atomic ratios obtained by XPS data indicated the formation of dibasic calcium phosphate dehydrate and dibasic calcium phosphate, revealing a coated material at low temperatures, 37 °C, promising for medical applications.
