Electrodialysis for Metal Removal and Recovery: A Review

Poly(glycolic acid) (PGA) is an essential biopolymer due to its thermal and mechanical properties and biodegradability which provide utility for medical applications and renewable industry. For biomedical applications, production of PGA with high molecular weight is an essential factor to possess adequate mechanical stability. Primary pathways for PGA synthesis are ring-opening polymerization of glycolide (ROP), direct polycondensation of glycolic acid, and solid-state polycondensation of halogen acetates. For PGA synthesis, different systems have been developed with using varying parameters including catalysis, initiators, solvents, and reaction temperature. This review summarizes the different synthesis pathways and physicochemical properties of PGA. Biomedical applications of PGA are also discussed.

A review on synthesis and biomedical applications of polyglycolic acid

The biological activities of some ternary nickel complexes with a Schiff base obtained from 4-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde and 2-aminophenol have been reported. The Schiff base (HL1) acts as a primary ligand whereas, anthranilic acid (HL2), 2-nitroaniline (HL3), alanine (HL4) and histidine (HL5) act as secondary ligand or co-ligand. The anticancer activity of these compounds was studied against human colon carcinoma (HCT-116), human hepatocellular liver carcinoma (HEPG-2) and human breast carcinoma (MCF-7) cell lines. As per the results, the compounds were active against the cell lines. The antioxidant activity of the same compounds was evaluated using DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl) radical scavenging and compared with ascorbic acid. The DFT computations for these compounds were made to understand the bonding mode by a GAUSSIAN 09 program. Moreover, a docking analysis using Autodock 4.2 software package was carried out against the tyrosine kinase receptor (PDB ID: 1M17). In addition, QSAR investigation was also performed to understand the biological potency of the ligand.

DFT, anticancer, antioxidant and molecular docking investigations of some ternary Ni(II) complexes with 2-[(E)-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]methyleneamino]phenol

The experimental methodology achieved in the present study signified that the adsorption and precipitation were main mechanisms occurred together in the removal of nickel from aqueous solution by sorption using cement kiln dust (CKD) byproduct as sorbent. Finding the contribution of each mechanism in the removal process and derivation an analytical model for finding the portion of precipitation were the focal points of this work. Results proved that pure precipitation was increased with the increase of CKD dosage and metal concentration where total removal (adsorption-precipitation) ranged from 45 to 100%. The SEM micrographs of the CKD sorbent before and after sorption process certified that there was crystal precipitates on the surface of the CKD. Also, these graphs in combination with FT-IR tests proved that [Ni(OH2)n]+2 (n=4-6) species were bonded with CKD and insoluble hydroxide species may be precipitated onto the CaO surfaces by co-precipitation, while K–O, Si-O and Ca-O groups enhanced the adsorption mechanism.

Predominant mechanisms for the removal of nickel metal ion from aqueous solution using cement kiln dust

The anticancer studies of a Schiff base; (E)-2((2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino-3-mercaptopropanoic acid (H2L) (obtained from 2hydroxybenzaldehyde and L-cysteine) and its transition metal complexes have been reported. The evaluation of the growth inhibitory action was studied for the compounds against human colon carcinoma (HCT-116), human hepatocellular liver carcinoma (HEPG-2), normal melanocytes (HFB-4) and human breast carcinoma (MCF-7) cell lines. The obtained results revealed that the Schiff base and its chelates are active against human hepatocellular liver carcinoma (HEPG-2) cell lines. The powder X-ray diffraction analysis for the compounds was carried out through Phillips X’Pert High score software. The density functional theory computation for ligand and Co(II), Ni (II) and Cu(II) metal complexes were made to understand the mode of bonding by GAUSSIAN 03 rev. A.01 programme. The quantitative structure-activity relationship investigation was performed by using HyperChem Professional 8.0.3 software to understand the biological potency of the ligands. Moreover, a docking analysis using iGEMDOCKv2.1 software was carried out against the kinase enzyme PDB ID:1fvv.

Transition Metal Complexes of (E)‐2((2‐hydroxybenzylidene) amino‐3‐mercaptopropanoic acid: XRD, Anticancer, Molecular modeling and Molecular Docking Studies

The potential negative impact of heavy metals on the ecosystem and human health in particular is evident. People are exposed to heavy metals through plant and animal food, water, soil and air. In industrial regions environment is usually contaminated with heavy metals. The theme of this research is to determine which metal elements are introduced into the production process of Portland cement in a cement factory in Lukavac (FCL) and to determine the metal input rate and their distribution at the entrance and exit of the process. In the process of production of cement clinker in FCL, metal elements are mostly entered by primary raw materials: limestone, marl lime, clay stone, sand; coal fly ash as secondary raw material and brown coal as regular fuel, generally come out with a finished solid products: clinker, cement and cement dust from the bag filter or gases. Coal fly ash and natural gypsum are used as additives for PC production. All refractory metals generally tend to be incorporated into the clinker, while the lower part, especially volatile and semi volatile metals (Cd, Hg), accumulates in the cement kiln dust. Most metals in cement are infused with clinker, except mercury and cobalt, which are entered from the ashes. Concentrations of metals at the entrance and exit of the kiln were determined using a Perkin - Elmer Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometer.
