The Cost of Caring: An Exploration of Compassion Fatigue, Compassion Satisfaction, and Job Satisfaction in Pediatric Nurses.

Pregnancy-specific stress (PSS) arises from the numerous changes that women experience during pregnancy and from their concerns about childbirth and the health of their offspring. Prolonged or elevated maternal stress heightens risk for poor fetal, infant, and child outcomes. The Prenatal Distress Questionnaire (PDQ) and its expanded successor, the revised Prenatal Distress Questionnaire (NuPDQ), were developed to assess PSS, but their psychometric properties and findings are not well-documented. We reviewed research using the PDQ (n = 45) or NuPDQ (n = 37). Results establish that PSS as measured by these instruments is common in pregnancy; PSS is associated with sociodemographic and obstetric characteristics, perceptions of pregnancy, health behaviors, maternal health, and birth outcomes. The NuPDQ is an especially appropriate tool to assess PSS, with demonstrated reliability and convergent, concurrent, and predictive validity. The ability to assess PSS in a reliable and valid manner is critical to advance research and improve maternal and child health.

Resumo Instrumentos de medida desempenham um importante papel na pesquisa, na pratica clinica e na avaliacao de saude. Estudos sobre a qualidade desses instrumentos fornecem evidencias de como as propriedades de medida foram avaliadas, auxiliando o pesquisador na escolha da melhor ferramenta para utilizacao. A confiabilidade e a validade sao consideradas as principais propriedades de medida de tais instrumentos. Confiabilidade e a capacidade em reproduzir um resultado de forma consistente, no tempo e no espaco. Validade refere-se a propriedade de um instrumento medir exatamente o que se propoe. Neste artigo sao apresentados, discutidos e exemplificados os principais criterios e testes estatisticos empregados na avaliacao da confiabilidade (estabilidade, consistencia interna e equivalencia) e validade (conteudo, criterio e construto) de instrumentos. A avaliacao das propriedades de medida de instrumentos e util para subsidiar a selecao de instrumentos validos e confiaveis, de modo a assegurar a qualidade dos resultados dos estudos.

Psychometric properties in instruments evaluation of reliability and validity.

Propriedades psicométricas na avaliação de instrumentos: avaliação da confiabilidade e da validade

Nursing personnel are at risk for developing musculoskeletal symptoms, which can result in persistent pain and inability to work. This study was designed to investigate the occurrence of musculoskeletal symptoms and their association with work role as well as to verify the relationship between pain intensity and disability among symptomatic individuals. Three hundred one nursing personnel, of whom 80.7% had musculoskeletal symptoms in at least one body part, participated in the study. The mean work ability score of symptomatic personnel was lower for physical demands. A significant difference between symptomatic and asymptomatic personnel was found for each demand measured by the Work Role Functioning Questionnaire, except social demand. Correlations were moderate but significant between pain intensity and disability. The results suggest that musculoskeletal symptoms interfere with work life.

Musculoskeletal symptoms, work ability, and disability among nursing personnel.

Introduction: work plays an important role in people’s life and depending on its organization and execution it can generate satisfaction or dissatisfaction. The most widely used method to assess job satisfaction has been the application of measuring instruments. Objective: to perform the cultural adaptation of the Job Satisfaction Survey for use in the context of Brazilian’s workers. Method: the instrument cultural adaptation consisted of the following steps: (1) Translation by two independent translators; (2) Proofreading by a third translator and specialists; (3) Back-translation by two independent translators; (4) Review by a committee review; (5) Verification of the Content Validity Index; (6) Pre-test with nursing personnel; (7) Latest adjustments. Results: semantic, idiomatic, cultural and conceptual equivalence between the translated version and the original version were obtained and it was observed ease of understanding and acceptance of the items of the questionnaire in the context of the nursing personnel. Conclusion: the analysis of the experts committee and the pre-test showed the items are relevant to Brazilian culture and to assess the scale proposed by the original instrument.

Adaptação cultural de um instrumento para avaliar a satisfação no trabalho

The occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders, their risk factors and its consequences have been of concern of scholars in the area of occupational health. This integrative review aimed to examine studies related to musculoskeletal symptoms in nursing personnel. It was decided to search for articles in national and international journals, published in Portuguese and Spanish, from 1996 to 2007, available in databases belonging to the Biblioteca Virtual em Saude (BVS) - Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciencias da Saude (LILACS), Base de Dados da Enfermagem (BDENF), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO). A total of 15 articles selected and analyzed according to the authors, publication year, country, population, type of survey, instrument used for data collection, time of prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms and the findings. It was found that the literature on the topic is scarce in Latin American countries. The studies evaluated different professional categories of the nursing staff and the instruments used were varied, some of them were validated and others not. There was variability in the time of prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms, as well as in the rates found. The diversity in methodological procedures makes difficult comparison between studies.
