Journal ArticleDOI
Organic pollutants in microplastics from two beaches of the Portuguese coast
TL;DR: Microplastics pose a threat to coastal environments due to their capacity to adsorb persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and further investigation is necessary to understand the relationship between plastic degradation and adsorption for different pollutants.
Journal ArticleDOI
Histological biomarkers in liver and gills of juvenile Solea senegalensis exposed to contaminated estuarine sediments: A weighted indices approach
Pedro M. Costa,Mário Diniz,Sandra Caeiro,Sandra Caeiro,Jorge Lobo,Marta Martins,Ana Maria Reis Ferreira,Miguel Caetano,Carlos Vale,T. Ángel DelValls,M. Helena Costa +10 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that histopathological indices provide reliable and discriminatory data even when biomonitoring as complex media as natural sediments, and that the effects of contamination may result not only from toxicant concentrations but also from their interactions, relative potency and sediment characteristics that ultimately determine bioavailability.
Journal ArticleDOI
Monitoring of a wide range of organic micropollutants on the Portuguese coast using plastic resin pellets
Kaoruko Mizukawa,Hideshige Takada,Maki Ito,Yeo Bee Geok,Junki Hosoda,Rei Yamashita,Mahua Saha,Satoru Suzuki,Carlos Miguez,João Frias,Joana Antunes,Paula Sobral,Isabelina Santos,Cristina Micaelo,Ana Maria Reis Ferreira +14 more
TL;DR: This study demonstrated that multiple sample locations, including locations in both urban and remote areas, are necessary for country-scale pellet watch.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genotoxic damage in Solea senegalensis exposed to sediments from the Sado Estuary (Portugal): Effects of metallic and organic contaminants
Pedro M. Costa,Jorge Lobo,Sandra Caeiro,Sandra Caeiro,Martins Martins,Ana Maria Reis Ferreira,Miguel Caetano,Carlos Vale,T. Ángel DelValls,Maria Helena Costa +9 more
TL;DR: A strong correlation exists between the overall increase in genotoxicity caused by exposure to sediment, and the percentage of ENA and DNA strand-breakage, confirming that they are different, and possibly non-linked effects that respond similarly to exposure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessment of the genotoxic potential of contaminated estuarine sediments in fish peripheral blood: laboratory versus in situ studies.
Pedro M. Costa,Teresa Neuparth,Sandra Caeiro,Sandra Caeiro,Jorge Lobo,Marta Martins,Ana Maria Reis Ferreira,Miguel Caetano,Carlos Vale,T. Ángel DelValls,Maria Helena Costa +10 more
TL;DR: It was demonstrated that laboratory and field bioassays for the risk assessment of sediment contamination may yield different genotoxicity profiles although both provided results that are in overall accordance with sediment contamination levels.
