Monitoring of a wide range of organic micropollutants on the Portuguese coast using plastic resin pellets
Kaoruko Mizukawa,Hideshige Takada,Maki Ito,Yeo Bee Geok,Junki Hosoda,Rei Yamashita,Mahua Saha,Satoru Suzuki,Carlos Miguez,João Frias,Joana Antunes,Paula Sobral,Isabelina Santos,Cristina Micaelo,Ana Maria Reis Ferreira +14 more
TL;DR: This study demonstrated that multiple sample locations, including locations in both urban and remote areas, are necessary for country-scale pellet watch.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sediment contamination, bioavailability and toxicity of sediments affected by an acute oil spill: Four years after the sinking of the tanker Prestige (2002).
Carmen Morales-Caselles,Judit Kalman,Cristina Micaelo,Ana Maria da Costa Ferreira,Carlos Vale,Inmaculada Riba,T.A. DelValls +6 more
TL;DR: The results point to a decrease in contamination with respect to previous studies and to the disappearance of the acute toxicity four years after the oil spill, however an important bioaccumulation of PAHs was detected in the organisms exposed to sediments from Corme-Laxe, suggesting that despite the recovery of the environmental quality of the area, effects in the biota might be occurring.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mobility of contaminants in relation to dredging operations in a mesotidal estuary (Tagus estuary, Portugal)
Carlos Vale,Ana Maria da Costa Ferreira,Cristina Micaelo,Miguel Caetano,Eduarda Pereira,Maria J. Madureira,Elsa Ramalhosa +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a 24-hour laboratory experiment demonstrated the complexity and quickness of anoxic sediments oxidation and showed that mussels accumulate metals and PCB congeners when placed in turbid aerated water.
Are coastal resources of NW Portugal fingerprinting hydrocarbons released from the Prestige accident? ¿Están los recursos costeros del NO de Portugal mostrando las huellas específicas de los hidrocarburos derramados por el Prestige?
TL;DR: In this paper, a sample of mussels, sardine, hake, blue whiting and pouting from the NW Portuguese coast, collected between 18 November 2002 and 6 January 2003, were analyzed for total hydrocarbons, individual n-alkanes and major isoprenoids, pristane and phytane.
