Small pelagic fish in the NW Mediterranean Sea: An ecological review
Isabel Palomera,María Pilar Olivar,Jordi Salat,Ana Sabatés,Marta Coll,Alberto García,Beatriz Morales-Nin +6 more
TL;DR: A general insight into the ecology of these species is provided through a revision of the information available in an environmental context and in relation to exploitation features to point out the gaps in knowledge necessary to understand the dynamics of small pelagic fish in the region.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sea warming and fish distribution: the case of the small pelagic fish, Sardinella aurita, in the western Mediterranean
TL;DR: Results show a marked increase in larval abundance during the last decades and the present appearance of larvae in the northernmost study areas, where they did not occur 20 years ago, indicating the successful reproduction of round sardinella in the north of the Mediterranean, where the species has expanded.
Journal ArticleDOI
Physical and biological processes controlling the distribution of fish larvae in the NW Mediterranean
TL;DR: This study analyzes how environmental conditions occurring in the NW Mediterranean, at local and seasonal scales, contribute to determine the temporal and spatial patterns of fish reproductive activity in the region.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of climate change on Mediterranean marine ecosystems: the case of the Catalan Sea
Eva María Calvo,Rafel Simó,Rafael Coma,Marta Ribes,Josep Pascual,Ana Sabatés,Josep Maria Gili,Carles Pelejero +7 more
TL;DR: The Catalan Sea, located between the eastern Iberian coast and the Balearic Islands, is a representative portion of the western Mediterranean basin and provides a valuable case study for climate change effects on Mediterranean ecosystems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Distribution pattern of larval fish populations in the Northwestern Mediterranean
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the distribution patterns of the larval fish community off the Catalan coast (NW Mediterranean) between April and October 1983 and found that the causes of this temporal heterogeneity lay in the species richness of the area and the spawning periods of adults.
