Luminescent chemodosimeters for bioimaging.

Two-photon absorption has important advantages over conventional one-photon absorption, which has led to applications in microscopy, microfabrication, three-dimensional data storage, optical power limiting, up-converted lasing, photodynamic therapy, and for the localized release of bio-active species. These applications have generated a demand for new dyes with high two-photon absorption cross-sections. This Review introduces the theory of two-photon absorption, surveys the wide range of potential applications, and highlights emerging structure-property correlations that can serve as guidelines for the development of efficient two-photon dyes.

Two-photon absorption and the design of two-photon dyes.

Recently, the use of phosphorescent heavy-metal complexes as chemosensors has attracted increasing interest due to their advantageous photophysical properties. This critical review focuses on the design principles and the recent development of phosphorescent chemosensors for metal cations, anions, pH, oxygen, volatile organic compounds and biomolecules based on some heavy-metal complexes (such as Pt(II)-, Ru(II)-, Re(I)-, Ir(III)-, Cu(I)-, Au(I)- and Os(II)-based complexes), in which the variation in phosphorescence signals induced by the interaction between heavy-metal complexes and analytes is utilized (217 references).

Phosphorescent chemosensors based on heavy-metal complexes

Fluoride is often added to drinking water and toothpaste because of its beneficial effects in dental health. It is also administered in the treatment of osteoporosis.1 While the beneficial effects of fluoride are well documented, chronic exposure to high levels of this anion can lead to dental or even skeletal fluorosis.2-4 Taking into account these adverse effects, a great deal of attention has been devoted to the discovery of improved analytical methods for the detection of fluoride, especially in water. This field of research has also been stimulated by the potential use of such methods for the detection of phosphorofluoridate nerve agents such as Sarin or uranium hexafluoride, which release fluoride upon hydrolysis. In addition to these applications, the capture of fluoride, especially in water, is a stimulating academic challenge because of the high hydration enthalpy of this anion (∆H° ) -504 kJ mol-1). * To whom correspondence should be addressed.
