During glacial periods of the Late Quaternary, mineral dust emissions from Earth’s dominant source areas were a factor of 2e4 higher than interglacial levels. The causes of these fluctuations are poorly understood, limiting interpretation of dust flux records and assessment of dust’s role in past climate changes. Here we consider several possible drivers of glacialeinterglacial dust flux changes in an effort to assess their relative importance. We demonstrate that a wide range of data supports wind gustiness as a primary driver of global dust levels, with steepened meridional temperature gradients during glacial periods causing increases in dust emissions through increases in the intensity and frequency of highspeed wind events in dust source areas. We also find that lake level records near dust source areas do not consistently support the hypothesis that aridity controls glacialeinterglacial dust emission changes on a global scale, and we identify evidence negating atmospheric pCO2 and sea level as dominant controls. Glaciogenic sediment supply, vegetation and aridity changes appear to be locally important factors but do not appear to explain the global nature of glacialeinterglacial dust flux changes. We suggest that the gustiness hypothesis is aviable explanation for the close correspondence between dust emissions and high-latitude temperatures observed in paleorecords and is worthy of further testing.

Gustiness: The driver of glacial dustiness?

Abstract This study documents the occurrence of atmospheric dust from Pennsylvanian carbonates of the Copacabana Formation, recovered in core (Mobil-Oxy Manuripi X-1) from the Madre de Dios basin (Bolivia), within southern mid-latitudes (~35°S) of western Gondwana. The Copacabana Formation spans Pennsylvanian-Early Permian time, and thus formed coeval with and in relative proximity to ice centers and associated glacial deposits located at southern paleolatitudes in adjoining regions of Gondwana (e.g. the Parana, Tarija, and Paganzo basins in Brazil, southeastern Bolivia, and Argentina, respectively). In Pennsylvanian time carbonate deposition of the Copacabana Formation occurred on a ramp isolated from fluvial-deltaic influx, and thus siliciclastic material in this system reflects atmospheric input. The study interval comprises a series of upwardly shallowing successions 1–3 m thick ranging from open marine ramp facies to more restricted inner-ramp facies, commonly capped by horizons of microkarsted and/or red mudstone reflecting subaerial exposure of the carbonate ramp. These horizons mark abnormal exposure and are interpreted to record glacial lowstands. Atmospheric dust from the pennsylvanian copacabana formation (bolivia): a high-resolution record of climate and volcanism from northwestern gondwana

Paleozoic and Mesozoic tectonic reconstructions of the Arctic regions have been a subject of debate in recent years. The Permian emergence of a landmass north of the Sverdrup Basin in the Canadian Arctic led to the shedding of northerly derived detritus, an event that followed volcanism and basin inversion pulses that began in the late Pennsylvanian. However, the mechanisms for these events and the Paleozoic to Mesozoic paleogeography of this region remain controversial. New detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology results from Permian to Lower Triassic strata from northern Axel Heiberg and Ellesmere islands constrain the magmatic events within this northern landmass and its implications for the tectonic regime of the Sverdrup Basin and adjacent domains. Permian to lowermost Triassic strata along the northern margin of the Sverdrup Basin contain zircons derived from Silurian to Devonian rocks (420–350 Ma), Timanian-aged basement (700–500 Ma), and a Permian syndepositional source (300–250 Ma). Coeval strata in the southern margin are dominated by zircons formed during the Taconic, Scandian, and post-Scandian phases of the Appalachian and Caledonian orogenies, respectively (480–400 Ma). The detrital zircon signatures of the analyzed strata on the northern margin of the Sverdrup Basin record continuous magmatism within the northern landmass from latest Carboniferous (ca. 300 Ma) to at least earliest Triassic (ca. 250 Ma) time. These results are indicative of ongoing subduction and development of a magmatic arc off the northern margin of Laurentia, with the Sverdrup Basin potentially located in the backarc region of a proto-Pacific convergent margin involving parts of Arctic Alaska, Chukotka, and the Chukchi Shelf. The hypothesized onset of subduction in latest Carboniferous time and closure of this backarc basin in the latest Permian to earliest Triassic provides an explanation for the shift in stress regimes in the Sverdrup Basin that led to basin inversion and volcanism episodes. Therefore, the data presented here supports a backarc to retroarc setting for the Sverdrup Basin and the possibility of a convergent margin regime for the northern edge of Laurentia during the late Paleozoic to Triassic, contrasting with the generally accepted rift and passive margin settings. Late Paleozoic to Triassic Arc Magmatism North of the Sverdrup Basin in the Canadian Arctic: Evidence from Detrital Zircon U-Pb Geochronology

Earth has sustained continental glaciation several times in its past. Because continental glaciers ground to low elevations, sedimentary records of ice contact can be preserved from regions that were below base level, or subject to subsidence. In such regions, glaciated pavements, ice-contact deposits such as glacial till with striated clasts, and glaciolacustrine or glaciomarine strata with dropstones reveal clear signs of former glaciation. But assessing upland (mountain) glaciation poses particular challenges because elevated regions typically erode, and thus have extraordinarily poor preservation potential. Here we propose approaches for detecting the former presence of glaciation in the absence or near-absence of ice-contact indicators; we apply this specifically to the problem of detecting upland glaciation, and consider the implications for Earth’s climate system. Where even piedmont regions are eroded, pro- and periglacial phenomena will constitute the primary record of upland glaciation. Striations on large (pebble and larger) clasts survive only a few km of fluvial transport, but microtextures developed on quartz sand survive longer distances of transport, and record high-stress fractures consistent with glaciation. Proglacial fluvial systems can be difficult to distinguish from non-glacial systems, but a preponderance of facies signaling abundant water and sediment, such as hyperconcentrated flood flows, non-cohesive fine-grained debris flows, and/or large-scale and coarse-grained cross-stratification are consistent with proglacial conditions, especially in combination with evidence for cold temperatures, such as rip-up clasts composed of noncohesive sediment, indicating frozen conditions, and/or evidence for a predominance of physical over chemical weathering. Other indicators of freezing (periglacial) conditions include frozen-ground phenomena such as fossil ice wedges and ice crystals. Voluminous loess deposits and eolian-marine silt/mudstone characterized by silt modes, a significant proportion of primary silicate minerals, and a provenance from non-silt precursors can indicate the operation of glacial grinding, even though such deposits may be far removed from the site(s) of glaciation. Ultimately, in the absence of unambiguous ice-contact indicators, inferences of glaciation must be grounded on an array of observations that together record abundant meltwater, temperatures capable of sustaining glaciation, and glacial weathering (e.g., glacial grinding). If such arguments are viable, they can bolster the accuracy of past climate models, and guide climate modelers in assessing the types of forcings that could enable glaciation at elevation, as well as the extent to which (extensive) upland glaciation might have influenced global climate.

Detecting upland glaciation in Earth’s pre-Pleistocene record


 Paleo-loess and silty eolian-marine strata are well recognized across the Carboniferous-Permian of equatorial Pangaea. Eolian-transported dust and loess appear in the late Devonian in the west, are common by the Late Carboniferous, and predominate across equatorial Pangaea by the Permian. The thickest loess deposits in Earth history –>1000 m− date from this time, and archive unusually dusty equatorial conditions, especially compared to the dearth of equatorial dust in the Cenozoic. Loess archives a confluence of silt generation, eolian emission and transport, and ultimate accumulation in dust traps that included ephemerally wet surfaces and epeiric seas. Orogenic belts sourced the silt, and mountain glaciation may have exacerbated voluminous silt production, but remains controversial. In western Pangaea, large rivers transported silt westward, and floodplain deflation supplied silt for loess and dust. Expansion of dust deposition in Late Pennsylvanian time records aridification that progressed across Pangaea, from west to east. Contemporaneous volcanism may have created acidic atmospheric conditions to enhance nutrient reactivity of dusts, affecting Earth’s carbon cycle. The late Paleozoic was Earth’s largest and most long-lived dust bowl, and this dust represents both an archive and agent of climate and climate change.

Dust and Loess as Archives and Agents of Climate and Climate Change in the Late Paleozoic Earth System

\n The Wordiekammen Formation, a carbonate ramp on Spitsbergen developed on the Northern Pangaean margin in Moscovian (Carboniferous) through Sakmarian (Permian) time at a paleolatitude of 30–35° N. The study site on the Nordfjorden High was isolated from any source of fluvio-deltaic input, such that detrital material that occurs in this system experienced eolian transport, thus forming a proxy for atmospheric dust loading. We analyzed two intervals, of Moscovian (10 m) and Asselian (27 m) age, at 20 cm resolution, and identified five mid-ramp subtidal facies organized in upwardly shallowing, high-frequency sequences 3–5 m thick. High-frequency sequence boundaries commonly exhibit signs of subaerial exposure (e.g., Microcodium) developed atop subtidal facies, recording glacioeustatic falls (glacial phases), although the Moscovian section has a severe karst overprint attributable to prolonged exposure on a paleohigh. Samples were processed to isolate the silicate-mineral fraction (SMF), which includes both detrital silicate material and authigenic silica mostly in the form of (fine-sand-size) doubly terminated quartz crystals. Detrital cores in these crystals, together with other evidence, indicate recrystallization from fine-grained (silt- and clay-size) dust.\n Analysis of the dust record demonstrates that the Asselian (peak icehouse) had a significantly higher atmospheric dust load than the Moscovian (moderate icehouse). In the Asselian interval, dust input varies commensurate with glacial–interglacial cyclicity. Highest dust contents correspond to transgressive facies immediately above sequence boundaries, indicating peak atmospheric dust loading at lowstand to incipient interglacial times. Provenance data from detrital-zircon and whole-rock geochemistry indicate two distinct source regions for the dust. Dust from the Moscovian and lower Asselian intervals reflects a continental island-arc signature consistent with sourcing from the basement of northeast Greenland. Dust from the upper Asselian interval is more consistent with recycling from Devonian and Carboniferous strata of the east Greenland Caledonides, likely deflated from fluvial systems draining this orogenic system, indicating an expansion of regions of eolian deflation.
