The Canary Eddy Corridor: A major pathway for long-lived eddies in the subtropical North Atlantic
Pablo Sangrà,Ananda Pascual,Ángel Rodríguez-Santana,Francisco Machín,Evan Mason,James C. McWilliams,Josep Lluís Pelegrí,Changming Dong,Anna Rubio,Javier Arístegui,Ángeles Marrero-Díaz,Alonso Hernández-Guerra,Antonio Martínez-Marrero,Maricel Auladell +13 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors report a new type of permanent structure in the eastern subtropical Atlantic Ocean, that they call the Canary Eddy Corridor, which is a zonal long-lived (>3 months) mesoscale eddy corridor, whose source is the flow perturbation of the Canary Current and the Trade Winds at the Canary Islands.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Bransfield current system
Pablo Sangrà,C. Gordo,Mónica Hernández-Arencibia,Ángeles Marrero-Díaz,Ángel Rodríguez-Santana,Alexander Stegner,Antonio Martínez-Marrero,Josep Lluís Pelegrí,Thierry Pichon +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used hydrographic data collected during two interdisciplinary cruises, CIEMAR and BREDDIES, to describe the mesoscale variability observed in the Central Basin of the Bransfield Strait.
Journal ArticleDOI
Life history of an anticyclonic eddy
Pablo Sangrà,Josep Lluís Pelegrí,Alonso Hernández-Guerra,Igor Arregui,J.M. Martín,Ángeles Marrero-Díaz,A. Martínez,Andry William Ratsimandresy,Ángel Rodríguez-Santana +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used the trajectory of three buoys dragged below the surface mixed layer, together with sea surface temperature imagery, to examine the evolution of an anticyclonic warm-core eddy since its generation by the Canary Islands.
Journal ArticleDOI
On the nature of oceanic eddies shed by the Island of Gran Canaria
Pablo Sangrà,Maricel Auladell,Ángeles Marrero-Díaz,Josep Lluís Pelegrí,Eugenio Fraile-Nuez,Ángel Rodríguez-Santana,J.M. Martín,Evan Mason,Alonso Hernández-Guerra +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used hydrographic and buoy data to compare the initial temperature fields and Lagrangian evolution of water parcels in two vortices generated by the southward flowing Canary Current passing around the island of Gran Canaria Island.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hydrographic cruises off northwest Africa: the Canary Current and the Cape Ghir region
Josep Lluís Pelegrí,Ángeles Marrero-Díaz,Andry William Ratsimandresy,A. Antoranz,J. Cisneros-Aguirre,C. Gordo,D. Grisolía,Alonso Hernández-Guerra,Irene Laiz,A. Martínez,Gregorio Parrilla,P. Pérez-Rodríguez,Ángel Rodríguez-Santana,Pablo Sangrà +13 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present hydrographic data for several sections located along the African coastline and off Cape Ghir, carried out at times of weak surface winds (October 1995 and September 1997).
