Machine Learning is the study of methods for programming computers to learn. Computers are applied to a wide range of tasks, and for most of these it is relatively easy for programmers to design and implement the necessary software. However, there are many tasks for which this is difficult or impossible. These can be divided into four general categories. First, there are problems for which there exist no human experts. For example, in modern automated manufacturing facilities, there is a need to predict machine failures before they occur by analyzing sensor readings. Because the machines are new, there are no human experts who can be interviewed by a programmer to provide the knowledge necessary to build a computer system. A machine learning system can study recorded data and subsequent machine failures and learn prediction rules. Second, there are problems where human experts exist, but where they are unable to explain their expertise. This is the case in many perceptual tasks, such as speech recognition, hand-writing recognition, and natural language understanding. Virtually all humans exhibit expert-level abilities on these tasks, but none of them can describe the detailed steps that they follow as they perform them. Fortunately, humans can provide machines with examples of the inputs and correct outputs for these tasks, so machine learning algorithms can learn to map the inputs to the outputs. Third, there are problems where phenomena are changing rapidly. In finance, for example, people would like to predict the future behavior of the stock market, of consumer purchases, or of exchange rates. These behaviors change frequently, so that even if a programmer could construct a good predictive computer program, it would need to be rewritten frequently. A learning program can relieve the programmer of this burden by constantly modifying and tuning a set of learned prediction rules. Fourth, there are applications that need to be customized for each computer user separately. Consider, for example, a program to filter unwanted electronic mail messages. Different users will need different filters. It is unreasonable to expect each user to program his or her own rules, and it is infeasible to provide every user with a software engineer to keep the rules up-to-date. A machine learning system can learn which mail messages the user rejects and maintain the filtering rules automatically. Machine learning addresses many of the same research questions as the fields of statistics, data mining, and psychology, but with differences of emphasis. Statistics focuses on understanding the phenomena that have generated the data, often with the goal of testing different hypotheses about those phenomena. Data mining seeks to find patterns in the data that are understandable by people. Psychological studies of human learning aspire to understand the mechanisms underlying the various learning behaviors exhibited by people (concept learning, skill acquisition, strategy change, etc.).

Data Mining - Concepts and Techniques.

We describe the design and use of the Stanford CoreNLP toolkit, an extensible pipeline that provides core natural language analysis. This toolkit is quite widely used, both in the research NLP community and also among commercial and government users of open source NLP technology. We suggest that this follows from a simple, approachable design, straightforward interfaces, the inclusion of robust and good quality analysis components, and not requiring use of a large amount of associated baggage.

The Stanford CoreNLP Natural Language Processing Toolkit

Few prior works study deep learning on point sets. PointNet by Qi et al. is a pioneer in this direction. However, by design PointNet does not capture local structures induced by the metric space points live in, limiting its ability to recognize fine-grained patterns and generalizability to complex scenes. In this work, we introduce a hierarchical neural network that applies PointNet recursively on a nested partitioning of the input point set. By exploiting metric space distances, our network is able to learn local features with increasing contextual scales. With further observation that point sets are usually sampled with varying densities, which results in greatly decreased performance for networks trained on uniform densities, we propose novel set learning layers to adaptively combine features from multiple scales. Experiments show that our network called PointNet++ is able to learn deep point set features efficiently and robustly. In particular, results significantly better than state-of-the-art have been obtained on challenging benchmarks of 3D point clouds.

PointNet++: Deep Hierarchical Feature Learning on Point Sets in a Metric Space

Despite progress in perceptual tasks such as image classification, computers still perform poorly on cognitive tasks such as image description and question answering. Cognition is core to tasks that involve not just recognizing, but reasoning about our visual world. However, models used to tackle the rich content in images for cognitive tasks are still being trained using the same datasets designed for perceptual tasks. To achieve success at cognitive tasks, models need to understand the interactions and relationships between objects in an image. When asked "What vehicle is the person riding?", computers will need to identify the objects in an image as well as the relationships riding(man, carriage) and pulling(horse, carriage) to answer correctly that "the person is riding a horse-drawn carriage." In this paper, we present the Visual Genome dataset to enable the modeling of such relationships. We collect dense annotations of objects, attributes, and relationships within each image to learn these models. Specifically, our dataset contains over 108K images where each image has an average of $$35$$35 objects, $$26$$26 attributes, and $$21$$21 pairwise relationships between objects. We canonicalize the objects, attributes, relationships, and noun phrases in region descriptions and questions answer pairs to WordNet synsets. Together, these annotations represent the densest and largest dataset of image descriptions, objects, attributes, relationships, and question answer pairs.

Visual Genome: Connecting Language and Vision Using Crowdsourced Dense Image Annotations

We present an algorithm for transferring physical attributes between webpages and 3D shapes. We crawl product catalogues and other webpages with structured metadata containing physical attributes such as dimensions and weights. Then we transfer physical attributes between shapes and real-world objects using a joint embedding of images and 3D shapes and a view-based weighting and aspect ratio filtering scheme for instance-level linking of 3D models and real-world counterpart objects. We evaluate our approach on a large-scale dataset of unscaled 3D models, and show that we outperform prior work on rescaling 3D models that considers only category-level size priors.

Cross-Modal Attribute Transfer for Rescaling 3D Models

We address the task of predicting what parts of an object can open and how they move when they do so. The input is a single image of an object, and as output we detect what parts of the object can open, and the motion parameters describ-ing the articulation of each openable part. To tackle this task, we create two datasets of 3D objects: OPDSynth based on existing synthetic objects, and OPDReal based on RGBD reconstructions of real objects. We then design O PD R CNN , a neural architecture that detects openable parts and predicts their motion parameters. Our experiments show that this is a challenging task especially when considering generalization across object categories, and the limited amount of information in a single image. Our architecture outperforms baselines and prior work especially for RGB image inputs.

OPD: Single-view 3D Openable Part Detection

This paper describes the joint Stanford-UBC knowledge base population system for the entity linking tasks. We participated in both the English and the cross-lingual tasks, using a dictionary from strings to possible Wikipedia titles, taken from our 2009 submission. This dictionary is based on frequencies of Wikipedia back-links, and it provides a strong context-independent baseline. For the English track, we improved on the results given by the dictionary by disambiguating entities using a distantly supervised classifier, trained on context extracted from Wikipedia. Since we did not use any text from the Wikipedia pages associated with the knowledge base nodes for the dictionary, we submitted that run to the no wiki text track, and the one using the distantly supervised classifier to the wiki text track. Our work focused on disambiguating among articles, allowing for very simple NIL strategies: the system returned NIL whenever selected Wikipedia articles were not present in the KB; moreover, NILs were then clustered only according to the target string. These simple approaches were sufficient for our runs to score above the median entry in each of their respective tracks for the English task; for the cross-lingual task, there was only one track, and our submissions (using the English-specific, context-independent dictionaries) fell below the median.

Named Entity Disambiguation (NED) is the task of linking a named-entity mention to an instance in a knowledge-base, typically Wikipedia. This task is closely related to word-sense disambiguation (WSD), where the supervised word-expert approach has prevailed. In this work we present the results of the word-expert approach to NED, where one classifier is built for each target entity mention string. The resources necessary to build the system, a dictionary and a set of training instances, have been automatically derived from Wikipedia. We provide empirical evidence of the value of this approach, as well as a study of the differences between WSD and NED, including ambiguity and synonymy statistics.

Evaluating the word-expert approach for Named-Entity Disambiguation

In the Vision-and-Language Navigation (VLN) task an embodied agent navigates a 3D environment, following natural language instructions. A challenge in this task is how to handle 'off the path' scenarios where an agent veers from a reference path. Prior work supervises the agent with actions based on the shortest path from the agent's location to the goal, but such goal-oriented supervision is often not in alignment with the instruction. Furthermore, the evaluation metrics employed by prior work do not measure how much of a language instruction the agent is able to follow. In this work, we propose a simple and effective language-aligned supervision scheme, and a new metric that measures the number of sub-instructions the agent has completed during navigation.
