Journal ArticleDOI
Photodynamic therapy of cancer. Basic principles and applications
TL;DR: The advantages of PDT over other conventional cancer treatments are its low systemic toxicity and its ability to selectively destroy tumours accessible to light.
Journal ArticleDOI
NIR-to-NIR Two-Photon Excited CaF2:Tm3+,Yb3+ Nanoparticles: Multifunctional Nanoprobes for Highly Penetrating Fluorescence Bio-Imaging
Ningning Dong,Marco Pedroni,Fabio Piccinelli,Giamaica Conti,Andrea Sbarbati,Juan Enrique Ramírez-Hernández,Laura Martínez Maestro,Maria del Carmen Iglesias de la Cruz,Francisco Sanz-Rodríguez,Angeles Juarranz,Feng Chen,Fiorenzo Vetrone,John A. Capobianco,José García Solé,Marco Bettinelli,Daniel Jaque,Adolfo Speghini +16 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors report on the remarkable two-photon excited fluorescence efficiency in the "biological window" of CaF2:Tm3+,Yb3+ nanoparticles.
Journal ArticleDOI
Morphological criteria to distinguish cell death induced by apoptotic and necrotic treatments
S. Rello,Juan C. Stockert,Victoria Elvira Torres Moreno,A Gámez,María Pacheco,Angeles Juarranz,Magdalena Cañete,Angeles Villanueva +7 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that morphological criteria allow to distinguish these cell death mechanisms, and show that the necrotic process occurs in a characteristic sequence (coalescence of membrane bubbles in a single big one that detaches from cells remaining on the substrate).
Journal ArticleDOI
CdSe Quantum Dots for Two-Photon Fluorescence Thermal Imaging
Laura Martínez Maestro,Emma Martín Rodríguez,Francisco Rodríguez,M. C. Iglesias-de la Cruz,Angeles Juarranz,Rafik Naccache,Fiorenzo Vetrone,Daniel Jaque,John A. Capobianco,José García Solé +9 more
TL;DR: The ability of CdSe quantum dots to image a temperature gradient artificially created in a biocompatible fluid (phosphate-buffered saline) and also their ability to measure an intracellular temperature increase externally induced in a single living cell are demonstrated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mechanisms of Photoaging and Cutaneous Photocarcinogenesis, and Photoprotective Strategies with Phytochemicals
R. J. Bosch,Neena Philips,Jorge A Suárez-Pérez,Jorge A Suárez-Pérez,Angeles Juarranz,Avani Devmurari,Jovinna Chalensouk-Khaosaat,Salvador González +7 more
TL;DR: The photoprotective strategies to prevent/treat photoaging and photocarcinogenesis include oral or topical agents that act as sunscreens or counteract the effects of UV radiation on DNA, cellular antioxidant balance, signal transduction pathways, immunology and the ECM.
