Heap bioleaching of a complex sulfide ore: Part I: Effect of pH on metal extraction and microbial composition in pH controlled columns
TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of pH on the bioleaching of a low-grade, black schist ore from Finland containing pyrrhotite, pyrite, pentlandite, chalcopyrite and other mineral sulfides was studied using columns containing 9.0 kg of agglomerated ore that was irrigated with nutrient supplemented surface water from the deposit at ambient temperature.
Journal ArticleDOI
Silicate mineral dissolution during heap bioleaching
Mark Dopson,Anna-Kaisa Halinen,Nelli Rahunen,Dan Boström,Jan-Eric Sundkvist,Marja Riekkola-Vanhanen,Anna H. Kaksonen,Jaakko A. Puhakka +7 more
TL;DR: The potential negative impact of silicate mineral dissolution on heap bioleaching is demonstrated by microbial inhibition and liquid flow by demonstrating that inhibition of Fe2+ oxidation during column leaching of two of the chalcopyrite ores was due to fluoride toxicity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mineral and iron oxidation at low temperatures by pure and mixed cultures of acidophilic microorganisms.
Mark Dopson,Anna-Kaisa Halinen,Nelli Rahunen,Bestamin Özkaya,Erkan Sahinkaya,Anna H. Kaksonen,E. Börje Lindström,Jaakko A. Puhakka +7 more
TL;DR: An enrichment culture from a boreal sulfide mine environment containing a low‐grade polymetallic ore was tested in column bioreactors for simulation of low temperature heap leaching and temperature gradient analysis of ferrousIron oxidation demonstrated two temperature optima for ferrous iron oxidation and that the mixed culture was capable of ferric iron oxidation at 5°C.
Journal ArticleDOI
Heap bioleaching of a complex sulfide ore: Part II. Effect of temperature on base metal extraction and bacterial compositions
TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of low to moderate temperatures (7 to 50°C) on the bio-leaching of a low-grade, multi-metal black schist ore from Finland in which pentlandite was the main valuable mineral, was studied using columns at set temperatures.
Journal ArticleDOI
Microbial community dynamics during a demonstration-scale bioheap leaching operation
Anna-Kaisa Halinen,Nelli J. Beecroft,Kirsi Määttä,Pauliina Nurmi,Katja Laukkanen,Anna H. Kaksonen,Marja Riekkola-Vanhanen,Jaakko A. Puhakka +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the microbial community of a low grade nickel ore demonstration-scale bioheap was examined under varying weather and operational conditions over a period of three years in Talvivaara, Finland.
