Journal ArticleDOI
Dietary plasticity of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) facilitates coexistence with competitively superior European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus)
TL;DR: It is suggested that Arctic charr may not necessarily need an extensive profundal zone as a refuge, but can coexist with whitefish if a third competing fish species like grayling occurs in the littoral habitat or if profitable small prey fish are available.
Journal ArticleDOI
Similar patterns of individual niche use are revealed by different time-integrated trophic tracers (stable isotopes and parasites)
TL;DR: The close relationships between diet variation, the time-integrated ecological tracers (SI and parasites) and functional trophic morphology (niche adaptations) evidently reflect long-term temporally stable niche use of each individual predator.
Journal ArticleDOI
Divergence and parallelism of parasite infections in Arctic charr morphs from deep and shallow lake habitats
TL;DR: The results highlight that host ecology and abiotic factors are important for structuring parasite communities, and suggest that stochastic events as well as transmission abilities are involved in structuring the parasite communities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Allometric trajectories of body and head morphology in three sympatric Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus (L.)) morphs.
Marianne Knutsdotter Simonsen,Anna Siwertsson,Colin E. Adams,Per-Arne Amundsen,Kim Præbel,Rune Knudsen +5 more
TL;DR: The findings suggest that different selective pressures could have been working on traits related to their trophic niche such as habitat and diet utilization of the three morphs, with the two profundal morphs experiencing almost identical environmental conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ontogenetic dynamics of infection with Diphyllobothrium spp. cestodes in sympatric Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus (L.) and brown trout Salmo trutta L.
Eirik Haugstvedt Henriksen,Rune Knudsen,Roar Kristoffersen,Armand M. Kuris,Kevin D. Lafferty,Anna Siwertsson,Per-Arne Amundsen +6 more
TL;DR: The findings support previous suggestions that the ability to establish in a second piscine host is greater for D. dendriticum than for Ditremum and hypothesize that fish prey may be the most important source for the Diphyllobothrium spp.
