Journal ArticleDOI
A transnational and holistic breeding approach is needed for sustainable wheat production in the Baltic Sea region.
Aakash Chawade,Rita Armoniené,Gunilla Berg,Gintaras Brazauskas,Gunilla Frostgård,Mulatu Geleta,Andrii Gorash,Tina Henriksson,Kristiina Himanen,Anne Ingver,Eva Johansson,Lise Nistrup Jørgensen,Mati Koppel,Reine Koppel,Pirjo Mäkelä,Rodomiro Ortiz,Wieslaw Podyma,Thomas Roitsch,Antanas Ronis,Jan T. Svensson,Pernilla Vallenback,Martin Weih +21 more
TL;DR: This review highlights major challenges for wheat cultivation in the Baltic Sea region and discusses various solutions integrating transnational collaboration for pre-breeding and technology sharing to accelerate development of low input wheat cultivars with improved host plant resistance to pathogen and enhanced adaptability to the changing climate.
Journal ArticleDOI
Yield increases due to fungicide control of leaf blotch diseases in wheat and barley as a basis for IPM decision-making in the Nordic-Baltic region
Marja Jalli,Janne Kaseva,Björn Andersson,Andrea Ficke,Lise Nistrup-Jørgensen,Antanas Ronis,Timo Kaukoranta,Jens-Erik Ørum,Annika Djurle +8 more
TL;DR: A large regional and yearly variation in disease severity, distribution and impact on yield is verified, emphasizing the need to adapt fungicide applications to the actual need based on locally adapted risk assessment systems.

Journal ArticleDOI
Diversity of populations of Phytophthora infestans in relation to patterns of potato crop management in Latvia and Lithuania
Riinu Kiiker,I. Skrabule,Antanas Ronis,David E. L. Cooke,Jens Grønbech Hansen,Ingrid H. Williams,Marika Mänd,Eve Runno-Paurson +7 more
TL;DR: A large number of the questioned people believe that food waste should be removed from the environment before it can be used as a source of infectious disease and this work has shown this to be a viable process.
Journal ArticleDOI
Validation of risk models for control of leaf blotch diseases in wheat in the Nordic and Baltic countries
Lise Nistrup Jørgensen,Niels Matzen,Andrea Ficke,Ghita Cordsen Nielsen,Marja Jalli,Antanas Ronis,Björn Andersson,Annika Djurle +7 more
TL;DR: The two risk models with few exceptions provided acceptable disease control and very few treatments were recommended by the models, saving 85–98% of treatments compared to the reference treatments, while in the wetter season 2019, 31% fewer applications were recommended.
