I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. A review on empirical mode decomposition in fault diagnosis of rotating machinery

The wavelet transform has emerged over recent years as a powerful time-frequency analysis and signal coding tool favoured for the interrogation of complex nonstationary signals. Its application to biosignal processing has been at the forefront of these developments where it has been found particularly useful in the study of these, often problematic, signals: none more so than the ECG. In this review, the emerging role of the wavelet transform in the interrogation of the ECG is discussed in detail, where both the continuous and the discrete transform are considered in turn.

The purpose of this chapter is to present the basic ideas of the theory of distributions. Distributions or generalized functions, as they are also known, have proved to be very useful in many branches of pure and applied mathematics. Many textbooks, monographs and articles have been written on their theory and their applications [12], [23], [53], [63], [64], [69], [71], [80], [97], [111]. Our present aim is to give a brief but solid introduction to the theory of distributions, particularly to those aspects that are important in the theory of asymptotic expansions.

Introduction to the Theory of Distributions

The empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is reviewed and some questions related to its effective performance are discussed. Its interpretation in terms of AM/FM modulation is done. Solutions for its drawbacks are proposed. Numerical simulations are carried out to empirically evaluate the proposed modified EMD.

On the relation between the fractional Brownian motion and the fractional derivatives

A definition of the fractional Brownian motion based on the fractional differintegrator characteristics is proposed and studied. It is shown that the model enjoys the usually required properties. A discrete-time version based in the backward difference and in the bilinear transformation is considered. Some results are presented.
