Eco-efficient cements: Potential economically viable solutions for a low-CO2 cement-based materials industry

Experimental techniques commonly used for high strain-rate testing of concrete in compression, together with the methods used for measurement and recording of stress and strain, are critically assessed in the first part of this paper. The physical capability of each loading method is discussed and some consideration is given to the definitions used for specifying the loading rate. The second part reviews the dynamic compressive strength (mostly uniaxial rather than bi- or triaxial) of plain concrete, while in the third part a review on deformation behaviour indicates that uncertainty and disagreement exist concerning changes in axial strain at high strain rates.

A detailed description of the instrumented dropweight impact machine is presented. The instrumentation, the calibration, the inertial loading correction, and the dynamic analysis of a concrete beam specimen undergoing three-point impact flexural loading are described. Some results, using such an impact testing machine, obtained from tests done on plain concrete, fiber-reinforced concrete, and conventionally reinforced concrete are presented. It is concluded that the use of such a testing machine may be successfully made in order to test cementitious materials under impact.

The influence of microfillers on enhancement of concrete strength

High Strength Concretes (HSC) with extremely low water to binder (w/b) ratios are characterized by high cracking sensitivity which is a consequence of increased autogenous shrinkage. The major reason for autogenous shrinkage—self-desiccation—cannot be eliminated by traditional curing methods. The application of the concept of internal curing by means of saturated lightweight aggregate was applied and shown to be effective in eliminating autogenous shrinkage. The present paper describes an approach to optimize the size and porosity of the light-weight aggregate to obtain effective internal curing with a minimum content of such aggregate.
