Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The data suggest the possibility that, in addition to effects on the respiratory chain, energy-coupling site I may be damaged by ethanol feeding.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The data suggest that acetaldehyde may be implicated in some of the toxic effects caused by chronic ethanol consumption, as the malate-aspartate, α-glycerophosphate, and fatty acid shuttles for the transfer of reducing equivalents, and oxidation by mitochondria, were highly sensitive to acetaldehyde.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Clofibrate interfered with the integrity of the mitochondrial membranes, since it stimulated ATPase activity and increased the normally low permeability of intact mitochondria toward NADH, which may explain the previous finding that the reconstituted a-glycerophosphate shuttle was not stimulated in rats fed clofibrates.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: It is suggested that the use of pyrazole to assess ethanol metabolism and its sequelae in vivo may have limitations, and the data mandate caution in advocating the therapeutic use ofpyrazole or its derivatives in man.
