Detection and analysis of neonicotinoids in river waters--development of a passive sampler for three commonly used insecticides.

Tomatoes produce the bioactive compounds lycopene and α-tomatine that are reported to have potential health-promoting effects in animals and humans, but our understanding of the roles of these compounds in the diet is incomplete. Our current knowledge gained from the chemistry and analysis of these compounds in fresh and processed tomatoes and from studies on their bioavailability, bioactivity, and mechanisms of action against cancer cells and other beneficial bioactivities including antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, cardiovascular, and immunostimulating effects in cells, animals, and humans is discussed and interpreted here. Areas for future research are also suggested. The collated information and suggested research might contribute to a better understanding of the agronomical, biochemical, chemical, physiological, molecular, and cellular bases of the health-promoting effects and facilitate and guide further studies needed to optimize the use of lycopene and α-tomatine in pure form and in fresh tomatoes and processed tomato products to help prevent or treat human disease.

Multi-residue method for determination of selected neonicotinoid insecticides in honey using optimized dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction combined with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

An atmospheric pressure photoionisation (APPI) source for liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) was applied to determine neonicotinoid pesticides in the aquatic environment. Dopant-assisted APPI was very effective in the ionisation of neonicotinoids. Neonicotinoids generated protonated molecules in APPI with high sensitivity, while adduct ions, such as sodiated molecules, were predominantly generated in conventional electrospray ionisation. The ionisation of neonicotinoids was confirmed by ultra-high-resolution MS. An analytical method coupled with solid phase extraction was developed for acetamiprid, clothianidin, dinotefuran, imidacloprid, nitenpyram, and thiamethoxam. Method detection limits were 0.47 to 2.1 ng L−1 for six neonicotinoids. Dinotefuran was the most frequent and highest among the neonicotinoids examined in the aquatic environment in Osaka, Japan. The maximum concentration of dinotefuran was 220 ng L−1. Given the toxicity of neonicotinoids for aquatic creatures, the concentrations observed here were substantially low. The change in concentrations was temporally coincident with the period of the neonicotinoid application. Although rapid photodegradation and some degradation products have been elucidated, the degradation products in the aquatic environment were not identified in the present study.

Evaluation of river pollution of neonicotinoids in Osaka City (Japan) by LC/MS with dopant-assisted photoionisation

Development of multiresidue DLLME and QuEChERS based LC–MS/MS method for determination of selected neonicotinoid insecticides in honey liqueur

We studied the analysis of trace amounts of neonicotinoid insecticides by liquid chromatography coupled with a thermal lens spectrometric detector (TLS). This multi-residue analysis method is based on the reversed phase separation on C18 column, isocratic elution and collinear dual beam TLS detection. The insecticides thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, acetamiprid and thiacloprid were detected with retention times of 4.4, 5.7, 6.5 and 8.5 min and limits of quantifications of 50, 89, 10, and 25 μg/L, respectively. The retention times agreed well with those obtained by the same chromatographic method but using a diode-array detector (DAD). The limits of quantifications for imidacloprid were identical in both techniques. However, the limits of quantifications for thiamethoxam, acetamiprid and thiacloprid were up to 8.5 times lower using the TLS detector compared to the diode-array detector. The applicability of the developed procedure was tested on spiked river water and potato samples.
