Qualitative Choice Analysis-Theory, Econometrics and an Application to Automobile Demand

Beer is the most consumed alcoholic beverage in the world and the third most popular beverage after water and tea. Emerging health-oriented lifestyle trends, demographics, stricter legislation, religious prohibitions, and consumers’ preferences have led to a strong and steady growth of interest for non-alcoholic beers (NABs), low-alcohol beers (LABs), as well for craft beers (CBs). Conventional beer, as the worlds most consumed alcoholic beverage, recently gained more recognition also due to its potential functionality associated with the high content of phenolic antioxidants and low ethanol content. The increasing attention of consumers to health-issues linked to alcohol abuse urges breweries to expand the assortment of conventional beers through novel drinks concepts. The production of these beers employs several techniques that vary in performance, efficiency, and usability. Involved production technologies have been reviewed and evaluated in this paper in terms of efficiency and production costs, given the possibility that craft brewers might want to adapt them and finally introduce novel non-alcoholic drinks in the market.

The Swedish National Road Administration's Swedish Road and Traffic Research Institute has developed a forecasting model of car ownership. A new approach was chosen for the model: its chief characteristics are that car ownership entry propensity is introduced as the primary dependent variable; and that cross-section analysis and longitudinal cohort analysis have been combined to make maximum use of empirical evidence. Geography of craft breweries in Central Europe: Location factors and the spatial dependence effect

Abstract Since 2011, when the Pinta Brewery brewed the first AIPA-style beer in Poland, dynamic growth of the craft beer market has been observed. While there were 70 breweries in 2010, in 2019 there were already about 420, most of them small. The number of new beers on the market also increased rapidly each year in the analysed period, from around 80 in 2013 to about 2,500 in 2019. Similar changes were noted in other countries, including the USA, where it was accepted to call this phenomenon ‘the craft beer revolution’. The aim of this paper is to indicate the reasons for the emergence and development of this process, using Poland as a case study. Based on statistical data and content analyses, as well as studying the modern history of the beer market, the distribution of craft beer pubs and the names of craft breweries, this work provides evidence that the proliferation of microbreweries in Poland can be confirmed by concepts such as a resource-partitioning model, neolocalism, path dependence, and the diffusion of innovations.

How and why did craft breweries ‘revolutionise’ the beer market? The case of Poland

The aim of the article is to present selected research directions and results of studies on the market for passenger cars (with an emphasis on its geographical dimension). The focus has been on four main groups of issues: (1) car ownership and car-demand modelling, (2) the relationship between the primary and secondary car market in emergingeconomies, (3) the role of spatial factors and public transport in the functioning of the car market and (4) the environmental impact of automotive expansion and ways of coping with that, such as electromobility and the sharing economy. Studies on car ownership and the demand for cars both confirm that volumes and rates of growth depend primarily on economic factors (GDP, personal incomes, car prices and prices of complementary goods). They also describe spatial and temporal differences in the so-called first automobile revolution (the spread of cars as a mode of transport). The next group of studies on the car market deals with the relationship between the primary and secondary markets in emerging economies (including Poland), in which car ownership has entered on to a path of rapid growth in recent years. The development of the market for passenger cars is also influenced significantly by such spatial factors as urbanisation, population density, the built environment and distance to city centres as well as the accessibility and operation of public transport. These issues, very important from a geographical point of view, are discussed in a subsequent part of the article, prior to current findings on the environmental impact of automobiles being described, in particular as regards the role of various fuels (especially gasoline-petrol and diesel) in generating emissions of harmful substances. The paper then ends with a brief discussion on electric and hybrid cars as well as the sharing economy. In the literature, the above-mentioned topics are found to be related to the so-called second automobile revolution, and are thus of key importance to the debate on the contemporary car market and changes therein. This interdisciplinary debate is seen to be worthy of an involvement on the part of geographers that is broader than hitherto.

Since 2011 on the beer market in Poland we have been observing an interesting trend noticeable earlier in the world, especially in Western Europe and the United States. This tendency manifests itself in the increase in the number and amount of production of the microbreweries industry – craft breweries, brew- pubs, collaboration breweries. Their origin should not be connected with quantitative leap in the form of market growth in beer sales, but with an increase of product quality. The main aim of this work is to present the development of the brewing industry in Poland in the years 2011–2016 with a particular emphasis on the phenomenon of the so-called the craft beer revolution. That means a growth in the market of craft beers, including expanding the product portfolio with new styles of beers so far not produced in Poland on a massive scale. In the present paper, particular attention was paid to the spatial distribution, intensity and dynamics of the phenomenon in Poland’s regions. The authors attempted to define basic terms that are new to Polish science, which were adapted from the English beer industry. Moreover, the authors present the origins, causes and effects of the phenomenon of “the craft beer revolution”. At the same time, the impact of the phenomenon on the socio-economic development in Poland was estimated. This included the multiplier effects. In the first part, the beer market in Poland in 2011–2016 was characterised (main potentates, production and consump- tion of beer). The second part focuses on small and medium-sized breweries (up to 200,000 hl of production per year). The topic of the article has not been researched from the point of view of geography in Poland yet.

W niniejszej pracy zanalizowano podstawy teoretyczne dzialania obszarow, na ktorych wspierana jest przedsiebiorczośc. Tym samym udzielono odpowiedzi na pytanie o zasadnośc i celowośc tworzenia stref aktywności gospodarczej. Poza tym podjeto probe określenia definicji stref aktywności gospodarczej i porownania jej z pojeciem specjalnej strefy ekonomicznej oraz wskazania zasadniczych roznic miedzy ich funkcjonowaniem.
