Journal ArticleDOI
Unsafe abortion: the preventable pandemic
David A. Grimes,Janie Benson,Susheela Singh,Mariana Romero,Bela Ganatra,Friday Okonofua,Iqbal Shah +6 more
TL;DR: Ending the silent pandemic of unsafe abortion is an urgent public-health and human-rights imperative, and access to safe abortion improves women's health, and vice versa, as documented in Romania during the regime of President Nicolae Ceausescu.
Journal ArticleDOI
Abortion incidence between 1990 and 2014: global, regional, and subregional levels and trends.
Gilda Sedgh,Jonathan Bearak,Susheela Singh,Akinrinola Bankole,Anna Popinchalk,Bela Ganatra,Clémentine Rossier,Caitlin Gerdts,Özge Tunçalp,Brooke Ronald Johnson,Heidi Bart Johnston,Leontine Alkema +11 more
TL;DR: Subregional, regional, and global levels and trends in abortion incidence for 1990 to 2014, and abortion rates in subgroups of women, using a Bayesian hierarchical time series model are estimated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Global, regional, and subregional classification of abortions by safety, 2010–14: estimates from a Bayesian hierarchical model
Bela Ganatra,Caitlin Gerdts,Clémentine Rossier,Clémentine Rossier,Brooke Ronald Johnson,Özge Tunçalp,Anisa Assifi,Gilda Sedgh,Susheela Singh,Akinrinola Bankole,Anna Popinchalk,Jonathan Bearak,Zhenning Kang,Leontine Alkema +13 more
TL;DR: Improved in-country data for health services and innovative research to address gaps are needed to improve future estimates and the paucity of empirical data is a limitation of these findings.
Journal ArticleDOI
Unintended pregnancy and abortion by income, region, and the legal status of abortion: estimates from a comprehensive model for 1990-2019.
Jonathan Bearak,Anna Popinchalk,Bela Ganatra,Ann-Beth Moller,Özge Tunçalp,Cynthia Beavin,Lorraine Kwok,Leontine Alkema +7 more
TL;DR: The global unintended pregnancy rate has declined, whereas the proportion of unintended pregnancies ending in abortion has increased, and the global average abortion rate in 2015-19 was roughly equal to the estimates for 1990-94.
Journal Article
Determinants of low birth weight: a community based prospective cohort study
Siddhi Hirve,Bela Ganatra +1 more
TL;DR: The findings suggest that selectively targetted interventions such as improving maternal education and nutrition, specifically anemia, wider availability of contraception to delay the first pregnancy and to increase pregnancy intervals may help in identifying and ensuring adequate care for those women at greatest risk of LBW.
