Journal ArticleDOI
Femtosecond electronic response of atoms to ultra-intense X-rays
Linda Young,Elliot P. Kanter,Bertold Krässig,Yuelin Li,Anne Marie March,S. T. Pratt,Robin Santra,Robin Santra,Stephen H. Southworth,Nina Rohringer,Louis F. DiMauro,Gilles Doumy,C. Roedig,Nora Berrah,Li Fang,M. Hoener,M. Hoener,Philip H. Bucksbaum,James P. Cryan,Shambhu Ghimire,James M. Glownia,David A. Reis,John D. Bozek,Christoph Bostedt,Marc Messerschmidt +24 more
TL;DR: The nature of the electronic response in a free atom to unprecedented high-intensity, short-wavelength, high-fluence radiation is revealed and successful modelling of X-ray/atom interactions using a straightforward rate equation approach augurs favourably for extension to complex systems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nonlinear Atomic Response to Intense Ultrashort X Rays
Gilles Doumy,Gilles Doumy,C. Roedig,Sang-Kil Son,Cosmin I. Blaga,Anthony DiChiara,Robin Santra,Nora Berrah,Christoph Bostedt,John D. Bozek,Philip H. Bucksbaum,James P. Cryan,Li Fang,Shambhu Ghimire,James M. Glownia,M. Hoener,Elliot P. Kanter,Bertold Krässig,M. Kuebel,Marc Messerschmidt,Gerhard G. Paulus,David A. Reis,Nina Rohringer,Linda Young,Pierre Agostini,Louis F. DiMauro +25 more
TL;DR: The nonlinear absorption mechanisms of neon atoms to intense, femtosecond kilovolt x rays are investigated and the nonlinear direct two-photon ionization cross section is orders of magnitude higher than expected from previous calculations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Unveiling and driving hidden resonances with high-fluence, high-intensity x-ray pulses.
Elliot P. Kanter,Bertold Krässig,Yuelin Li,Anne Marie March,Phay J. Ho,Nina Rohringer,Robin Santra,Stephen H. Southworth,Louis F. DiMauro,Gilles Doumy,C. Roedig,Nora Berrah,Li Fang,M. Hoener,Philip H. Bucksbaum,Shambhu Ghimire,David A. Reis,John D. Bozek,Christoph Bostedt,Marc Messerschmidt,Linda Young +20 more
TL;DR: This work demonstrates the propensity of high-fluence, femtosecond x-ray pulses to alter the target within a single pulse, i.e., to unveil hidden resonances, by cracking open inner shells energetically inaccessible via single-photon absorption, and to consequently trigger damaging electron cascades at unexpectedly low photon energies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Development of high-repetition-rate laser pump/x-ray probe methodologies for synchrotron facilities
Anne Marie March,Andrew B. Stickrath,Gilles Doumy,Elliot P. Kanter,Bertold Krässig,Stephen H. Southworth,Klaus Attenkofer,C. Kurtz,Lin X. Chen,Linda Young +9 more
TL;DR: The use of high repetition rate, short pulse lasers as pump sources will dramatically enhance the duty cycle and efficiency in data acquisition and hence capabilities for laser-pump/x-ray probe studies of ultrafast structural dynamics at synchrotron sources.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nondipolar asymmetries of photoelectron angular distributions.
Bertold Krässig,M. Jung,Donald S. Gemmell,Elliot P. Kanter,T. LeBrun,Stephen H. Southworth,Linda Young +6 more
TL;DR: The measured asymmetries are in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations, which include interference between the electric-dipole and electric-quadrupole photoionization amplitudes.
