Journal ArticleDOI
Femtosecond electronic response of atoms to ultra-intense X-rays
Linda Young,Elliot P. Kanter,Bertold Krässig,Yuelin Li,Anne Marie March,S. T. Pratt,Robin Santra,Robin Santra,Stephen H. Southworth,Nina Rohringer,Louis F. DiMauro,Gilles Doumy,C. Roedig,Nora Berrah,Li Fang,M. Hoener,M. Hoener,Philip H. Bucksbaum,James P. Cryan,Shambhu Ghimire,James M. Glownia,David A. Reis,John D. Bozek,Christoph Bostedt,Marc Messerschmidt +24 more
TL;DR: The nature of the electronic response in a free atom to unprecedented high-intensity, short-wavelength, high-fluence radiation is revealed and successful modelling of X-ray/atom interactions using a straightforward rate equation approach augurs favourably for extension to complex systems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nonlinear Atomic Response to Intense Ultrashort X Rays
Gilles Doumy,Gilles Doumy,C. Roedig,Sang-Kil Son,Cosmin I. Blaga,Anthony DiChiara,Robin Santra,Nora Berrah,Christoph Bostedt,John D. Bozek,Philip H. Bucksbaum,James P. Cryan,Li Fang,Shambhu Ghimire,James M. Glownia,M. Hoener,Elliot P. Kanter,Bertold Krässig,M. Kuebel,Marc Messerschmidt,Gerhard G. Paulus,David A. Reis,Nina Rohringer,Linda Young,Pierre Agostini,Louis F. DiMauro +25 more
TL;DR: The nonlinear absorption mechanisms of neon atoms to intense, femtosecond kilovolt x rays are investigated and the nonlinear direct two-photon ionization cross section is orders of magnitude higher than expected from previous calculations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Time-Resolved Pump-Probe Experiments at the LCLS
James M. Glownia,James P. Cryan,Jakob Andreasson,Ali Belkacem,Nora Berrah,Cosmin I. Blaga,Christoph Bostedt,John D. Bozek,Louis F. DiMauro,Li Fang,Josef Frisch,Oliver Gessner,Markus Gühr,Janos Hajdu,M. P. Hertlein,M. Hoener,Gang Huang,O. Kornilov,J. P. Marangos,Anne Marie March,Brian K. McFarland,Hamed Merdji,Vladimir S. Petrovic,Chandra Raman,Dipanwita Ray,David A. Reis,Mariano Trigo,James L. White,William E. White,Russell Wilcox,Linda Young,Ryan Coffee,Philip H. Bucksbaum +32 more
TL;DR: This analysis shows that the relative arrival time of the Ti:Sapphire laser and the x-ray pulses had a distribution with a standard deviation of approximately 120 fs, which suggests that simple technical improvements could reduce the jitter to better than 50 fs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ultraintense X-Ray Induced Ionization, Dissociation, and Frustrated Absorption in Molecular Nitrogen
M. Hoener,Li Fang,O. Kornilov,Oliver Gessner,S. T. Pratt,Markus Gühr,Elliot P. Kanter,Cosmin I. Blaga,Christoph Bostedt,John D. Bozek,Philip H. Bucksbaum,Christian Buth,Christian Buth,M. H. Chen,Ryan Coffee,James P. Cryan,Louis F. DiMauro,M. Glownia,Erik R. Hosler,Edwin Kukk,Stephen R. Leone,Stephen R. Leone,Brian K. McFarland,Marc Messerschmidt,Brendan Murphy,Vladimir S. Petrovic,Daniel Rolles,Nora Berrah +27 more
TL;DR: A detailed picture of intense x-ray induced ionization and dissociation dynamics is revealed, including a molecular mechanism of frustrated absorption that suppresses the formation of high charge states at short pulse durations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Double Core-Hole Production in N 2 : Beating the Auger Clock
Li Fang,M. Hoener,M. Hoener,Oliver Gessner,Francesco Tarantelli,S. T. Pratt,O. Kornilov,Christian Buth,Christian Buth,Markus Gühr,Elliot P. Kanter,Christoph Bostedt,John D. Bozek,Philip H. Bucksbaum,M. H. Chen,Ryan Coffee,James P. Cryan,M. Glownia,Edwin Kukk,Stephen R. Leone,Stephen R. Leone,Nora Berrah +21 more
TL;DR: The first direct observations of the former type of core hole in a molecule are reported, in good agreement with theory, and an experimental upper bound for the relative contribution of the latter type is provided.
