A MODEL FOR THE EROSION OF METALS BY SPHERICAL PARTICLES AT NORMAL INCIDENCE - eScholarship

Slurry erosion is a seriousmenace inmost of the hydromachine components all around the globe. Slurry erosion is accountable for heavy economic losses. However, some countermeasures are being taken tomitigate the effect of sand particles passing through hydro-machine parts and research is also underway to improve the component surface by applying different surface coatings. Laser cladding is a surface deposition process that is used to achieve very goodmetallurgical bondingwithminimum porosity as compared to other surface coating techniques. In this research paper, an attempt has been made to compile the literature related to laser cladding technology, its applications, process parameters, coatingmaterials and their effectiveness to bestow solutions to various types of surface degradationwith special emphasis on slurry erosion problems. This paperwill serve as a reference for the researchers working in the area of slurry erosion prevention.

Laser cladding technique for erosive wear applications: a review

In the present work, erosion wear due to slurry mixture flow has been investigated using a slurry erosion pot tester. Erosion tests are conducted on three different slurry pipe materials, namely, mild steel, SS202, and SS304, to establish the influence of rotational speed, concentration, and time period. In order to increase erosion wear resistance, a high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) coating technique is used to deposit a WC-10Co4Cr coating on the surface of all piping materials. Experimental results show that rotational speed is a highly-influencing parameter for the erosion wear rate as compared to solid concentration, time duration, and weighted mean diameter. WC-10Co4Cr HVOF coating improved the erosion resistance of piping materials up to 3.5 times. From experimental data, the exponents of solid concentration, velocity, and the size of particles are calculated for the empirical erosion wear equation. A functional equation of the erosion wear rate is developed. The predicted erosion wear is in agreement with the experimental data and found to be within a deviation of ±12%.

In the present investigation, the effect of kinetic energy of different materials of the same-sized solid particles is examined on copper as target material using slurry pot tester. Quartz, Silicon carbide and Alumina are the impacting solid particles used for conducting trials. It is understood that the kinetic energy and stress concentration of impacting particles on target surface are responsible for material removal from the target surface, also the effect of erodent property like its shape and density is more dominant at shallow impact angles compared to higher impact angles. However, it is reported in literature that the exponent of velocity varies from 1.87 to 4.00 for ductile materials. Thus, different materials with the same-sized solid particles at constant kinetic energy were used to conduct the experiments. It is observed that for three different materials mass loss for the same mean particle size is nearly constant at 90° orientation angle but variation is found in 30° orientation angle. Further, the SEM micrographs of these solid particles show that alumina have sharp edges and angular nature. Silicon carbide is sub-angular in nature while quartz is blocky in nature. SEM micrographs of eroded surfaces show that at shallow impact angles the material is mainly removed by the platelet mechanism and material is displaced in the direction of flow. Also it is observed that increasing the velocity for quartz particle increases the crater length as compared to other two materials. Erosion wear was found more when alumina are used as the impacting particle due to their angular nature. At normal impact, indentation craters with rim are observed with significance increase in crater size when quartz is used as impacting particles.

The Effects of Constant Kinetic Energy of Different Impacting Particles on Slurry Erosion Wear of AA 6063

The control of harmful emissions from diesel engines has always been one of the primary elements in obtaining improvement in air quality and number of innovations has been performed in this domain in past many years. In the present work effect of Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) as fuel additive on CI engine is investigated regarding reduction in Smoke and NOx emissions and effect of engine parameter on effective of DMC on them. Also, present work tried to optimize the percentage of Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and operating parameter to achieve better engine economy and emissions control using Taguchi method. Present study evaluated the impacts different blending ratio of DMC (0 - 20%) in diesel fuel. This DMC blends are tested with three significant parameters as compression ratio (CR 15:1 to 19:1), fuel injection pressure (FIP, 200 to 280 bar), fuel injection timing (FIT, 21° to 24°, b°TDC). After analyzing SN Ratio and Contour Interaction Plots, the optimum effect of dimethyl carbonate is obtained at 5-10% blending with diesel with engine operating conditions of Compression Ratio at 18, Injection Pressure at 250 Bar and Injection Timing at 23 °bTDC. It is also observed that single objective method used here was not able identify the exact optimize combinations of DMC with engine operating parameter hence selection of suitable multi objective method of optimization is necessary for further study and optimization process. 

Experimental investigation on the effect of optimized dimethyl carbonate on CI engine performance & Emissions at various engine operating parameters using Taguchi method

This paper deals with the procedure of designing the 360-degree welding turn table with scissor height adjuster. This 360-degree turn table can be rotated as convenient to the welder using worm and worm gear arrangement. Rotation allows better reach but would not really reduce fatigue if the welder had to bend every time, he had to weld something. The second part of this product is a scissor height adjuster that allows the user to increase or decrease the height of the table using linked, folding supports in a crisscross pattern. Paper involves technical characteristics, design considerations, calculations of worm and worm gear, scissor mechanisms and hydraulic cylinder. Also gives the idea of materials used for components according to the task they perform. A 3-D model is created and simulated. As a result of analysis, it concludes that the table designed could safely be used for welding operations.
