Growth and population parameters of ringed seals (Pusa hispida) from Svalbard, Norway, 2002–2004

TL;DR: There is a possibility that the sub-stantial increase in the number of polar bears over the past 20 years, since hunting the species in Svalbard ceased in 1973, may have played a role in the ob-served change in the ringed seal population.
Journal ArticleDOI

Recent changes in distribution and relative abundance of cetaceans in the Norwegian Sea and their relationship with potential prey

TL;DR: This study illustrates that both small and large cetaceans that reside in the Norwegian Sea have the capability to rapidly perform shifts in distribution and abundance patterns dependent of the access to different types and behaviour of prey species.
Journal ArticleDOI

Population changes of Antarctic fur seals at Nyrøysa, Bouvetøya

TL;DR: Historical accounts of significant numbers of animals being present towards the end of the period of sealing, indicate that the geographic isolation and inaccessibility of this site may have resulted in the Bouvetøya population being one of three populations that survived a series of periods of extreme exploitation of this species.

Is current management of the Antarctic krill fishery in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean precautionary

TL;DR: In this paper, the management of the Antarctic krill fishery in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, and current knowledge about the state of the regional krill stock are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Prey selection of offshore killer whales Orcinus orca in the Northeast Atlantic in late summer: spatial associations with mackerel

TL;DR: Two summer-season ecosystem-based surveys in the Norwegian Sea using observational, acoustic, oceanographic, plankton net, and pelagic trawl haul data found any spatial overlap between killer whales and the 3 most common and abundant pelagic fish species: herring, mackerel, and blue whiting.
