Long-term survival of critically ill patients treated with prolonged mechanical ventilation: a systematic review and meta-analysis
TL;DR: Although a high proportion of patients survived to hospital discharge, fewer than half of patients survive beyond 1 year, and future studies should focus on optimum patient selection for prolonged mechanical ventilation and integration of long-term outcome information into clinical decision making.
Journal ArticleDOI
Association Between Postresuscitation Partial Pressure of Arterial Carbon Dioxide and Neurological Outcome in Patients With Post–Cardiac Arrest Syndrome
Brian W. Roberts,J. Hope Kilgannon,Michael E. Chansky,Neil Mittal,Jonathan Wooden,Stephen Trzeciak +5 more
TL;DR: Hypocapnia and hypercapnia were common after cardiac arrest and were independently associated with poor neurological outcome, suggesting that PaCO2 derangements could be potentially harmful for patients after resuscitation from cardiac arrest.
Journal ArticleDOI
Multiple organ dysfunction after return of spontaneous circulation in postcardiac arrest syndrome.
Brian W. Roberts,J. Hope Kilgannon,Michael E. Chansky,Neil Mittal,Jonathan Wooden,Joseph E. Parrillo,Stephen Trzeciak +6 more
TL;DR: The hypothesis that extracerebral organ dysfunction is common and associated with mortality in postcardiac arrest syndrome is supported, and appears to be driven by postresuscitation hemodynamic dysfunction and oxygenation impairment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Association Between Early Hyperoxia Exposure After Resuscitation From Cardiac Arrest and Neurological Disability: Prospective Multicenter Protocol-Directed Cohort Study.
Brian W. Roberts,J. Hope Kilgannon,Benton R. Hunter,Michael A. Puskarich,Lisa Pierce,Michael W. Donnino,Marion Leary,Jeffrey A. Kline,Alan E. Jones,Nathan I. Shapiro,Benjamin S. Abella,Stephen Trzeciak +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the association between hyperoxia exposure after resuscitation from cardiac arrest and clinical outcomes and reported conflicting results, and their objective was to test th...

Curricula for empathy and compassion training in medical education: A systematic review
Sundip N. Patel,Alexis Pelletier-Bui,Stephanie Smith,Michael B. Roberts,Hope Kilgannon,Stephen Trzeciak,Brian W. Roberts +6 more
TL;DR: Evidence suggests that training can enhance physician empathy and compassion, and training curricula should incorporate the specific behaviors identified in this report.
