Summary 1. Agricultural intensification reduces ecological resilience of land-use systems, whereas paradoxically, environmental change and climate extremes require a higher response capacity than ever. Adaptation strategies to environmental change include maintenance of shade trees in tropical agroforestry, but conversion of shaded to unshaded systems is common practice to increase short-term yield. 2. In this paper, we review the short-term and long-term ecological benefits of shade trees in coffee Coffea arabica, C. canephora and cacao Theobroma cacao agroforestry and emphasize the poorly understood, multifunctional role of shade trees for farmers and conservation alike. 3. Both coffee and cacao are tropical understorey plants. Shade trees in agroforestry enhance functional biodiversity, carbon sequestration, soil fertility, drought resistance as well as weed and biological pest control. However, shade is needed for young cacao trees only and is less important in older cacao plantations. This changing response to shade regime with cacao plantation age often results in a transient role for shade and associated biodiversity in agroforestry. 4. Abandonment of old, unshaded cacao in favour of planting young cacao in new, thinned forest sites can be named ‘short-term cacao boom-and-bust cycle’, which counteracts tropical forest conservation. In a ‘long-term cacao boom-and-bust cycle’, cacao boom can be followed by cacao bust due to unmanageable pest and pathogen levels (e.g. in Brazil and Malaysia). Higher pest densities can result from physiological stress in unshaded cacao and from the larger cacao area planted. Risk-averse farmers avoid long-term vulnerability of their agroforestry systems by keeping shade as an insurance against insect pest outbreaks, whereas yield-maximizing farmers reduce shade and aim at short-term monetary benefits. 5. Synthesis and applications. Sustainable agroforestry management needs to conserve or create a diverse layer of multi-purpose shade trees that can be pruned rather than removed when crops mature. A better understanding of processes that shape farmers’ adaptation to climate change is critical to identify vulnerable entities and to develop well-targeted adaptation policies. However, it is currently poorly understood what determines farmers’ adaptation and how to measure it. In this study, we develop an activity-based adaptation index (AAI) and explore the relationship between socioeconomic variables and farmers’ adaptation behavior by means of an explanatory factor analysis and a multiple linear regression model using latent variables. The model was tested in six villages situated in two administrative wards in the Morogoro region of Tanzania. The Mlali ward represents a system of relatively high agricultural potential, whereas the Gairo ward represents a system of low agricultural potential. A household survey, a rapid rural appraisal and, a stakeholder workshop were used for data collection. The data were analyzed using factor analysis, multiple linear regression, descriptive statistical methods and qualitative content analysis. The empirical results are discussed in the context of theoretical concepts of adaptation and the sustainable livelihood approach. We found that public investment in rural infrastructure, in the availability and technically efficient use of inputs, in a good education system that provides equal chances for women, and in the strengthening of social capital, agricultural extension and, microcredit services are the best means of improving the adaptation of the farmers from the six villages in Gairo and Mlali. We conclude that the newly developed AAI is a simple but promising way to capture the complexity of adaptation processes that addresses a number of shortcomings of previous index studies.

Can farmers’ adaptation to climate change be explained by socio-economic household-level variables?

Empirical research was conducted to investigate retrenchment as an integral component of the overall turnaround process. An industry study provided an anchored operational definition of a turnaround situation, indications of its internal and external causes, and an application of an absolute measure of its severity. The research further produced an empirical discrimination between retrenchment as a stand-alone response to financial decline and retrenchment as an initial phase of a turnaround strategy, and an identification of activities that can be used to classify entrepreneurial vs. efficiency emphases in a turnaround firm's recovery response.

Crop production in the tropics is subject to considerable climate variability caused by the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon that is likely to become even more pronounced during the twenty-first century. Little is known about the impact of ENSO-related drought on crop yields and food security, especially at the household level. This paper seeks to contribute to closing this knowledge gap with a case study from Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Its main objective is to measure household resilience towards drought periods and to identify its influencing factors to deduce policy implications. Using indicators for consumption expenditures, we construct an index measuring household drought resilience; we then apply an asset-based livelihood framework to identify its determinants. Most of the drought-affected farm households are forced to substantially reduce expenditures for food and other basic necessities. Households’ drought resilience is strengthened by the possession of liquid assets, access to credit, and the level of technical efficiency in agricultural production. The results suggest a number of policy recommendations, namely improvement of the farmers’ access to ENSO forecasts, the provision of credit and savings products to facilitate consumption smoothing, and the intensification of agricultural extension in view of low levels of productivity found in agricultural production.

Beban kerja sangat penting bagi sebuah perusahaan.Dengan pemberian beban kerja yang efektif perusahaan dapat mengetahui sejauh mana karyawannya dapat diberikan beban kerja yang maksimal dan sejauh mana pengaruhnya terhadap kinerja perusahaan itu sendiri.Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh beban kerja terhadap kinerja karyawan Bank Rakyat Indonesia (persero) Tbk Cabang Krekot. Data diperoleh dari 127 responden, uji chi square digunakan untuk mengetahui sikap responden terhadap variabel beban kerja dan kinerja berdasarkan faktor demografik. Hasil uji chi square menunjukan adanya perbedaan sikap berdasarkan demografik responden. Hasil analisis rank spearman menunjukan bahwa variabel beban kerja memiliki korelasi dengan variabel kinerja, sementara untuk sub variabel lainnya saling memiliki korelasi namun tingkat korelasinya rendah. Untuk mengetahui pengaruh beban kerja terhadap kinerja kerja karyawan Bank Rakyat Indonesia Cabang Krekot digunakan teknik analisis statistika Structural Equation Modelling berbasis variance dengan Metode Partial Least Square (PLS) , hasil analisis menunjukan bahwa beban kerja berpengaruh positif dan signifikan secara langsung terhadap kinerja Karyawan BRI Cabang Krekot pada tingkat signifikansi 5% (p = 0.10882), maka hipotesis awal terima Ho dengan t hitung 13.45 lebih besar dari t tabel 1.96 Kata kunci: beban kerja, kinerja karyawan, Bank Rakyat Indonesia (persero) Tbk, pengaruh, cabang krekot

The Lore Lindu National Park has received much attention nationally and internationally during the past few decades. Maintaining existing levels of biodiversity has become an increasingly challenging task involving decision-makers and stakeholders at different levels of aggregation. A quarter of all mammal species of the earth are facing extinction within the next 30 years and one in eight bird species (12%) within the next 100 years (Hilton-Taylor, C., 2000; BirdLife International, 2000). The three factors that are responsible for the decrease in biodiversity are habitat loss, overexploitation and the introduction of alien species (Primack 2000). Sulawesi has an outstandingly unique flora and fauna (Stattersfield et al. 1998, Myers et al. 2000) and the Lore Lindu National Park is a key protected area for the conservation of Sulawesi’s biodiversity since it is one of only two protected areas in the Central Province (Coates et al. 1997). But the loss of biodiversity is closely linked to other problems and much more is at stake. Policy makers, scientists and the public are increasingly concerned about tropical deforestation and its negative consequences such as climate change, reduced timber supply, flooding, silting, and soil degradation (Kaimowitz and Angelsen 1998). In the case of Central Sulawesi, a combination of numerous factors contribute towards a trend of decreasing biodiversity. Primary forest lands are rapidly being converted to agricultural lands and practices such as slash and burn have increased this trend. The conversion of primary forest for the cultivation of perennial crops, mainly cocoa has been taking place for a long time. Farmers may very well be aware of the negative long term consequences of encroaching on the national park and logging of primary forest trees, but under the existing socio-economic circumstances, often short term private benefits will prevail over long term social costs. A central question in this connection would be: 
To what extent is it really necessary for households to use land that is situated in the national park or convert land that is still covered by primary forest to agricultural land?

Encroachments on Primary Forests: Are They Really Driven by Despair?

Pada dasarnya penelitian ini mengkaji upaya peningkatan produksi padi melalui efisiensi teknis usahatani di Jawa Barat sebagai sentra produksi padi. Secara khusus tujuan operasionalnya yaitu : (1) Menentukan fungsi produksi stochastic frontier dan menganalisis faktor-faktornya, (2) Menentukan fungsi inefisiensi stochastic frontier dan menganalisis faktor-faktornya. Data yang digunakan adalah data PATANAS 2010 di Provinsi Jawa Barat. Pemilihan desa berdasarkan sebaran jumlah tipe desa sawah irigasi berbasis padi (tipe desa 1) menurut provinsi di Jawa Barat; Desa Tugu Kabupaten Indramayu, Desa Simpar Kabupaten Subang, dan Desa Sindang Sari Kabupaten Karawang dengan total 160 observasi. Penelitian ini menggunakan model produksi frontier parametric stokastik yang dirancang untuk mengatasi masalah error pada frontier parametric deterministik. Model disebut stokastik karena output yang diamati dibatasi oleh variabel stokastik (s xi + vi). Adapun hasil dari penelitian ini Implikasinya adalah jika pemerintah hendak meningkatkan produksi padi, maka variabel lahan lah yang seharusnya menjadi perhatian utama dengan potensi lahan di Indonesia cukup besar terutama lahan kering. Selain lahan, variable bibit dan pupuk KCL  juga  signifikan  berpengaruh terhadap produksi. Masih kurangnya penggunaan kedua input ini dikarenakan harganya yang mahal. Selama ini subsidi lebih kepada pupuk urea sehingga implikasinya pemerintah perlu mendukung pengadaan benih dan pupuk KCL dengan harga yang terjangkau.  Rata-rata efisiensi teknis usahatani padi di Jawa Barat lebih dari 70% yaitu 74.22%  yang berarti kondisi usahatani padi di Jawa Barat telah efisien. Petani paling efisien memiliki nilai efisiensi teknis 96.34% dan yang paling rendah 40.125%. Variabel yang signifikan mempengaruhi inefisiensi yaitu mutu benih, intensitas penanaman padi (IP) dan musim.

The research aims to analyse contribution of Good Corporate Governance (GCG) implementation in Indonesia banking industry and its healthiness as well as its competitiveness. The research employs case study approach with the objects of State-owned Banks, which are Bank Mandiri, BRI, and BNI compared to Private Banks, which are BCA and Bukopin. Stepwise regression test are applied to find the correlation between GCG, healthiness, dan competitiveness, while Kruskall Wallis test is used to find whether any significant difference exists between the banks. The result shows that GCG implementation, based on the statistical methods, has significant relationship with the healthiness, which are inherent risk profile and capital adequacy variable, also with the competitiveness, which are productivity, profitability, and market valuation variable.
