Impedance spectroscopy : theory, experiment, and applications

This review describes recent advances in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) with an emphasis on its novel applications to various electrochemistry-related problems. Section 1 discusses the development of new EIS techniques to reduce measurement time. For this purpose, various forms of multisine EIS techniques were first developed via a noise signal synthesized by mixing ac waves of various frequencies, followed by fast Fourier transform of the signal and the resulting current. Subsequently, an entirely new concept was introduced in which true white noise was used as an excitation source, followed by Fourier transform of both excitation and response signals. Section 2 describes novel applications of the newly developed techniques to time-resolved impedance measurements as well as to impedance imaging. Section 3 is devoted to recent applications of EIS techniques, specifically traditional measurements in various fields with a special emphasis on biosensor detections.

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy

This article introduces the radical approach of applying alkaline anion-exchange membranes (AAEMs) to meet the current challenges with regards to direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). A review of the literature is presented with regards to the testing of fuel cells with alkaline membranes (fuelled with hydrogen or methanol) and also to candidate alkaline anion-exchange membranes for such an application. A brief review of the directly related patent literature is also included. Current and future research challenges are identified along with potential strategies to overcome them. Finally, the advantages and challenges with the direct electrochemical oxidation of alternative fuels are discussed, along with how the application of alkaline membranes in such fuel cells may assist in improving performance and fuel efficiency.

Prospects for Alkaline Anion-Exchange Membranes in Low Temperature Fuel Cells†

Preventing the degradation of metal perovskite solar cells (PSCs) by humid air poses a substantial challenge for their future deployment. We introduce here a two-dimensional (2D) A2PbI4 perovskite layer using pentafluorophenylethylammonium (FEA) as a fluoroarene cation inserted between the 3D light-harvesting perovskite film and the hole-transporting material (HTM). The perfluorinated benzene moiety confers an ultrahydrophobic character to the spacer layer, protecting the perovskite light-harvesting material from ambient moisture while mitigating ionic diffusion in the device. Unsealed 3D/2D PSCs retain 90% of their efficiency during photovoltaic operation for 1000 hours in humid air under simulated sunlight. Remarkably, the 2D layer also enhances interfacial hole extraction, suppressing nonradiative carrier recombination and enabling a power conversion efficiency (PCE) >22%, the highest reported for 3D/2D architectures. Our new approach provides water- and heat-resistant operationally stable PSCs with a record-level PCE.

Diagnostic tools in PEM fuel cell research: Part I Electrochemical techniques

The influence of hindered water removal from a polymer electrolyte fuel cell under constant load was investigated
 using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The cathodic gas outlet of the cell was closed and impedance
 measurements were performed at periodic time intervals. Under the experimental conditions, the investigated
 system is far from steady-state conditions. It is shown that enhanced mathematical techniques are required for
 evaluation of the impedance data obtained. These techniques, the time course interpolation as well as
 the Z-HIT refinement, lead
 to quasi-causal spectra which are well
 interpreted by means of the porous electrode model.

Validation and evaluation of electrochemical impedance spectra of systems with states that change with time

The influence of carbon monoxide poisoning on the platinum anode in a polymer electrolyte fuel cell was investigated
 using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Impedance measurements of the cell under constant
 load were performed at periodic time intervals. Due to the poisoning effect of the carbon monoxide,
 the system changes its state during the experiment. The reconstruction of quasi-causal spectra was made possible using enhanced numerical procedures, especially the time course interpolation and the Z-HIT refinement.
 The reconstructed impedance spectra show a strong time dependence and exhibit pseudo-inductive contributions
 at the low frequency part of the spectra which increase during the experiment. Analysis of the spectra
 suggests that the pseudo-inductive behaviour can be attributed to a surface relaxation process of the anode.
 Furthermore, the influence of carbon monoxide on the electrochemical behaviour of the contaminated fuel
 cell may be interpreted by means
 of a Faraday
 impedance in addition to
 potential-dependent hindrance of the charge transfer.

Relaxation Impedance as a Model for the Deactivation Mechanism of Fuel Cells due to Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

… we have to say sorry for the long time you had to wait for this new issue of Electrochemical Applications. The delay was mainly caused by two facts: on the one hand we developed a lot of new products like the high current potentiostats of the EL- and the PP-series, the NOISE probe with outstanding features (not only for noise measurements) and the new PC interface which is running under Windows95/98 as well as under WindowsNT/2000 now. On the other hand we had a lot of scientific presentations at well-known meetings which yield enough stuff for the next issues of Electrochemical Applications. Due to these facts we increased the Zahner team, and I am proud to introduce to you Dr. Werner Strunz, our new co-worker. He studied chemistry in Heidelberg, Germany and took his doctor’s degree on “Electrical Conducting Coordination Polymers“.
