The turbulence models available for the prediction of complex turbulent shear layers are reviewed in this paper, concentrating mainly on three-dimensional flows, flows subjected to curvature and body rotation, separated flows, and vortex flows. A critical review of zero-equation, one-equation, two-equation, algebraic Reynolds stress, and full Reynolds stress models are carried out, with a specific emphasis on their applicability to complex flows. It is concluded that algebraic eddy viscosity models and kappa-epsilon/kappa-omega models, with a constant value of coefficients, are not adequate for complex flows. The models which include a description of stresses, either through an algebraic Reynolds stress model or a full Reynolds stress model, are essential for adequate prediction of these flows. It is recommended that systematic experimental investigations be carried out to isolate various complex interactions in order to understand and model the various effects and to carry out an extension of the present models to include complex flows.

Hybrid Simulation of Wake-Vortex Evolution During Landing on Flat Terrain and with Plate Line

Experimental techniques, including flying-hot-wire anemometry, have been used to determine the pressure and velocity characteristics of a flow designed to simulate the trailing-edge region of an airfoil at high angle of attack. Emphasis is placed on the region of recirculating flow and on the downstream wake. It is shown that the effect of this recirculation is large even though the details of the flow within it may be unimportant. Normal stresses and cross-stream pressure gradients are important immediately upstream and downstream of the recirculating flow and are associated with strong streamline curvature. The relative importance of the terms in the transport equations for mean momentum and turbulence energy are quantified and the implications for procedures which solve potential-flow and boundary-layer equations and for alternative calculation methods are discussed.

Characteristics of a trailing-edge flow with turbulent boundary-layer separation

This paper examines and contrasts the response of planar turbulent wakes with initially symmetric and asymmetric mean velocity profiles to identical imposed streamwise pressure gradients. The focus on near wake behavior, profile asymmetry, and pressure gradient is motivated by their relevance to high-lift systems for commercial transport aircraft. In the experiments, the symmetric wake is generated by a flat plate with a tapered trailing edge. Active and passive flow control are applied on an identical second plate in order to generate the asymmetric wake. Both favorable and adverse constant pressure gradients are imposed on the wakes by means of a downstream diffuser section with fully adjustable top and bottom wall contour. For both symmetric and asymmetric wakes, the effect of pressure gradient on wake spreading, mean velocity defect decay, and the streamwise evolution of the turbulent stresses are documented in detail. In this manner, the role of asymmetry in strained wake development is isolated. We also gauge the ability of commonly used one- and two-equation turbulence models to predict the streamwise wake evolution observed in the experiments.

An experimental investigation of symmetric and asymmetric turbulent wake development in pressure gradient

An experimental investigation of the near wake of a thin airfoil at various incidence angles is reported in this paper. The airfoil (NACA 0012 basic thickness form) was located in a wind tunnel, and the wake structure was measured using hot-wire sensors. The measurements of mean-velocity, turbulence intensity and Reynolds-stress components across the wake at several distances downstream show the complex nature of the near wake and its asymmetrical behavior. The asymmetry in the wake property, which is maintained up to a length of 1.5 chords downstream of the trailing edge of the blade, is dependent on the incidence angle of the inlet flow. The streamwise velocity defect in an asymmetric wake decays more slowly compared to that of a symmetric wake. The streamline curvature due to the blade loading has a substantial effect on the mean velocity profile as well as the turbulence structure. The numerical study of the same wake indicates that the existing turbulence closure models need some modification to account for the asymmetric characteristics of the wake.
