This review describes recent advances and applications in the field of organic photorefractive materials, an interesting area in the field of organic electronics and promising candidate for various aspects of photonic applications. We describe the current state of knowledge about the processes involved in the formation of photorefractive gratings in organic materials and focus on the chemical and photo-physical aspects of the material structures employed in low glass-transition temperature amorphous composites and organic photorefractive glasses. State-of-the art materials are highlighted and recent demonstrations of photonic applications relying on the reversible holographic nature of the photorefractive materials are discussed.

Organic Photorefractive Materials and Applications

A new photorefractive (PR) material sensitized with a novel functional unit DiPBI is prepared based on the guest/host approach. This unique mixture exhibits strong absorption in the whole range of visible light. Moreover, the photorefractive performance as well as PR speed is improved by far compared to the widely used sensitizer PCBM.

Innovative Sensitizer DiPBI Outperforms PCBM

The electro-nanopatterning and mechanism of pattern formation in azobenzene-containing layer-by-layer (LbL) ultrathin films is described using surface probe microscopy techniques. First, arrays of nanodots were patterned on these films to investigate applied time at constant voltage bias dependence in electro-nanopatterning. The anisotropic mass transport and polar alignment of the azobenzene-containing films were observed after applying the electric field and heating the sample locally with the cantilever tip. On the basis of this novel phenomenon, small-sized surface relief gratings (SRG)s and their alignment were fabricated and observed by current-sensing atomic force microscopy. The rate of mass transport for the polymer is mainly controlled by the applied time at constant voltage bias between the cantilever and the electrode/substrate.

Electro-nanopatterning of surface relief gratings on azobenzene layer-by-layer ultrathin films by current-sensing atomic force microscopy.

The influence of chromophore solubility enhancements on photorefractive grating rise time and device lifetime is investigated. Three azo chromophores differing primarily in compatibility with a polyvinylcarbazole host polymer were synthesized. Aromatic substitutions to the chromophore increased the device lifetime from several days to years although electric-field-induced poling experiments indicated that chromophore orientational mobility is severely hindered, resulting in photorefractive grating rise times approaching several hours. The incorporation of a flexible butyl chain to the aromatic substituted chromophores significantly enhanced the orientational mobility. These chromophores could be loaded as high as 60wt% with no degradation in transparency for one year following fabrication.
