"Grid" computing has emerged as an important new field, distinguished from conventional distributed computing by its focus on large-scale resource sharing, innovative applications, and, in some cases, high performance orientation. In this article, the authors define this new field. First, they review the "Grid problem," which is defined as flexible, secure, coordinated resource sharing among dynamic collections of individuals, institutions, and resources--what is referred to as virtual organizations. In such settings, unique authentication, authorization, resource access, resource discovery, and other challenges are encountered. It is this class of problem that is addressed by Grid technologies. Next, the authors present an extensible and open Grid architecture, in which protocols, services, application programming interfaces, and software development kits are categorized according to their roles in enabling resource sharing. The authors describe requirements that they believe any such mechanisms must satisfy and discuss the importance of defining a compact set of intergrid protocols to enable interoperability among different Grid systems. Finally, the authors discuss how Grid technologies relate to other contemporary technologies, including enterprise integration, application service provider, storage service provider, and peer-to-peer computing. They maintain that Grid concepts and technologies complement and have much to contribute to these other approaches.

The Anatomy of the Grid: Enabling Scalable Virtual Organizations

A 2001 IBM manifesto observed that a looming software complexity crisis -caused by applications and environments that number into the tens of millions of lines of code - threatened to halt progress in computing. The manifesto noted the almost impossible difficulty of managing current and planned computing systems, which require integrating several heterogeneous environments into corporate-wide computing systems that extend into the Internet. Autonomic computing, perhaps the most attractive approach to solving this problem, creates systems that can manage themselves when given high-level objectives from administrators. Systems manage themselves according to an administrator's goals. New components integrate as effortlessly as a new cell establishes itself in the human body. These ideas are not science fiction, but elements of the grand challenge to create self-managing computing systems.

Cloud computing and emerging IT platforms: Vision, hype, and reality for delivering computing as the 5th utility

Cloud computing is a recent advancement wherein IT infrastructure and applications are provided as ‘services’ to end-users under a usage-based payment model. It can leverage virtualized services even on the fly based on requirements (workload patterns and QoS) varying with time. The application services hosted under Cloud computing model have complex provisioning, composition, configuration, and deployment requirements. Evaluating the performance of Cloud provisioning policies, application workload models, and resources performance models in a repeatable manner under varying system and user configurations and requirements is difficult to achieve. To overcome this challenge, we propose CloudSim: an extensible simulation toolkit that enables modeling and simulation of Cloud computing systems and application provisioning environments. The CloudSim toolkit supports both system and behavior modeling of Cloud system components such as data centers, virtual machines (VMs) and resource provisioning policies. It implements generic application provisioning techniques that can be extended with ease and limited effort. Currently, it supports modeling and simulation of Cloud computing environments consisting of both single and inter-networked clouds (federation of clouds). Moreover, it exposes custom interfaces for implementing policies and provisioning techniques for allocation of VMs under inter-networked Cloud computing scenarios. Several researchers from organizations, such as HP Labs in U.S.A., are using CloudSim in their investigation on Cloud resource provisioning and energy-efficient management of data center resources. The usefulness of CloudSim is demonstrated by a case study involving dynamic provisioning of application services in the hybrid federated clouds environment. The result of this case study proves that the federated Cloud computing model significantly improves the application QoS requirements under fluctuating resource and service demand patterns. CloudSim: a toolkit for modeling and simulation of cloud computing environments and evaluation of resource provisioning algorithms

Biomedical research increasingly depends on access to and analysis of distributed medical and biomedical data. In biomedical research, datasets are often collected at multiple locations, as it is difficult to recruit required patient populations at one location. The sensitive nature of these datasets leads to a need for secure sharing methods that can work with distributed databases and image archives. The efficient implementation of such methods is complicated by the fact that the researchers who need to access data are often behind firewalls that prohibit inbound connections. This restriction, combined with large data volumes and many small files, leads to significant data transfer challenges. We present a data management framework suitable for such distributed biomedical research environments and describe its application in the context of FBIRN, a distributed data-sharing system for medical researchers. The framework includes security tools, catalogs for managing datasets, and a secure data transfer service.

A Data Management Framework for Distributed Biomedical Research Environments

This paper proposes a parallel programming notation and a method of reasoning about programs with the following characteristics: (1) Parallel Composition The notation provides different forms of interfaces between processes; the more restrictive the interface, the simpler the proofs of process composition. A flexible interface is that of cooperating processes with a shared address space; proofs of programs that use this interface are based on non-interference [OG76] and temporal logic [Pnu81,CM88, Lam9l]. We also propose more restrictive interfaces and specifications that allow us to use the following specificattion rule: the strongest specification of a parallel composition of processes is the conjunction of the strongest specifications of its components. This rule is helpful in deriving parallel programs. (2) Determinism A process that does not use certain primitives of the notation is guaranteed to be deterministic. Programmers who wish to prove that their programs are deterministic are relieved of this proof obligation if they restrict their programs to a certain subset of the primitives.
