Cytochrome Oxidase Activity and Mitochondrial Gene Expression in Skeletal Muscle of Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
J Sauleda,Francisco J. García-Palmer,Rudolf J. Wiesner,Salvador Tarraga,Inga Harting,Purificación Tomás,Cristina Gómez,Carles Saus,Andreu Palou,Alvar Agusti +9 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that the activity of COX is increased in skeletal muscle of patients with COPD and chronic respiratory failure, and they suggest that this is likely regulated at the translational level by increasing the number of mitochondrial ribosomes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae clearance by alveolar macrophages is impaired by exposure to cigarette smoke.
Pau Martí-Lliteras,Verónica Regueiro,Pau Morey,Derek W. Hood,Carles Saus,Jaume Sauleda,Alvar Agusti,José A. Bengoechea,Junkal Garmendia +8 more
TL;DR: It was shown that alveolar macrophages clear NTHI infections by adhesion, phagocytosis, and phagolysosomal processing of the pathogen, and Mechanistically, the data showed that CSE reduced PI3K signaling activation triggered by NTH I, and treatment of CSE-exposed cells with the glucocorticoid dexamethasone reduced the amount of TNF-α secreted upon NTHi infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evidence for a non-replicative intracellular stage of nontypable Haemophilus influenzae in epithelial cells.
Pau Morey,Victoria Cano,Pau Martí-Lliteras,Antonio López-Gómez,Verónica Regueiro,Carles Saus,José A. Bengoechea,Junkal Garmendia +7 more
TL;DR: It is found that NTHi invades the airway epithelium by a distinct mechanism, requiring microtubule assembly, lipid rafts integrity, and activation of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) signalling, and it is shown that PCho is not responsible for Nthi intracellular location.
Journal ArticleDOI
Role of lung epithelial cells in defense against Klebsiella pneumoniae pneumonia.
TL;DR: The results show that lung epithelial cells play a key role as a host defense mechanism against K. pneumoniae pneumonia, using two different strategies: (i) ingestion and control of the microorganisms and (ii) opsonization of themicroorganisms.
Journal ArticleDOI
Minerval induces apoptosis in Jurkat and other cancer cells.
Victoria Lladó,Antonio Gutierrez,Jordi Martínez,Jesús Casas,Silvia Terés,Mónica Higuera,Antonio Galmés,Carles Saus,Joan Besalduch,Xavier Busquets,Pablo V. Escribá +10 more
TL;DR: It is shown that Minerval also induced apoptosis in Jurkat T‐lymphoblastic leukaemia and other cancer cells, and the effectiveness of this non‐toxic anticancer drug and its wide spectrum against different types of cancer is explained.
