Journal ArticleDOI
Gait speed and survival in older adults.
Stephanie A. Studenski,Subashan Perera,Kushang V. Patel,Caterina Rosano,Kimberly A. Faulkner,Marco Inzitari,Jennifer S. Brach,Julie Chandler,Peggy M. Cawthon,Elizabeth Connor,Michael C. Nevitt,Marjolein Visser,Stephen B. Kritchevsky,Stefania Badinelli,Tamara B. Harris,Anne B. Newman,Jane A. Cauley,Luigi Ferrucci,Jack M. Guralnik +18 more
TL;DR: In this pooled analysis of individual data from 9 selected cohorts, gait speed was associated with survival in older adults and predicted survival was as accurate as predicted based on age, sex, use of mobility aids, and self-reported function.
Journal ArticleDOI
Physical activity predicts gray matter volume in late adulthood The Cardiovascular Health Study
Kirk I. Erickson,Cyrus A. Raji,Oscar L. Lopez,James T. Becker,Caterina Rosano,A.B. Newman,H.M. Gach,Paul M. Thompson,A.J. Ho,Lew Kuller +9 more
TL;DR: Greater amounts of walking are associated with greater gray matter volume, which is in turn associated with a reduced risk of cognitive impairment, and greatergray matter volume associated with PA reduced the risk for cognitive impairment 2-fold.
Journal ArticleDOI
Limited Literacy and Mortality in the Elderly: The Health, Aging, and Body Composition Study
Rebecca L. Sudore,Kristine Yaffe,Suzanne Satterfield,Tamara B. Harris,Kala M. Mehta,Eleanor M. Simonsick,Anne B. Newman,Caterina Rosano,Ronica N. Rooks,Susan M. Rubin,Hilsa N. Ayonayon,Dean Schillinger +11 more
TL;DR: Limited literacy is independently associated with a nearly 2-fold increase in mortality in the elderly, given the growth of the aging population and the prevalence of chronic diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Limited Literacy in Older People and Disparities in Health and Healthcare Access
Rebecca L. Sudore,Kala M. Mehta,Eleanor M. Simonsick,Tamara B. Harris,Anne B. Newman,Suzanne Satterfield,Caterina Rosano,Ronica N. Rooks,Susan M. Rubin,Hilsa N. Ayonayon,Kristine Yaffe +10 more
TL;DR: To determine the relationship between health literacy, demographics, and access to health care, a national survey of over-65s and over-75s is conducted in the United States.
Journal ArticleDOI
Predictors of maintaining cognitive function in older adults: The Health ABC Study
Kristine Yaffe,Alexandra J. Fiocco,Karla Lindquist,Eric Vittinghoff,Eleanor M. Simonsick,A.B. Newman,Suzanne Satterfield,Caterina Rosano,Susan M. Rubin,Hilsa N. Ayonayon,T.B. Harris +10 more
TL;DR: Elders who maintain cognitive function have a unique profile that differentiates them from those with minor decline, and some of these factors are modifiable and thus may be implemented in prevention programs to promote successful cognitive aging.
