Electrospinning is a highly versatile method to process solutions or melts, mainly of polymers, into continuous fibers with diameters ranging from a few micrometers to a few nanometers. This technique is applicable to virtually every soluble or fusible polymer. The polymers can be chemically modified and can also be tailored with additives ranging from simple carbon-black particles to complex species such as enzymes, viruses, and bacteria. Electrospinning appears to be straightforward, but is a rather intricate process that depends on a multitude of molecular, process, and technical parameters. The method provides access to entirely new materials, which may have complex chemical structures. Electrospinning is not only a focus of intense academic investigation; the technique is already being applied in many technological areas.

Electrospinning: A Fascinating Method for the Preparation of Ultrathin Fibers

Over the past few decades, researchers have established artificial enzymes as highly stable and low-cost alternatives to natural enzymes in a wide range of applications. A variety of materials including cyclodextrins, metal complexes, porphyrins, polymers, dendrimers and biomolecules have been extensively explored to mimic the structures and functions of naturally occurring enzymes. Recently, some nanomaterials have been found to exhibit unexpected enzyme-like activities, and great advances have been made in this area due to the tremendous progress in nano-research and the unique characteristics of nanomaterials. To highlight the progress in the field of nanomaterial-based artificial enzymes (nanozymes), this review discusses various nanomaterials that have been explored to mimic different kinds of enzymes. We cover their kinetics, mechanisms and applications in numerous fields, from biosensing and immunoassays, to stem cell growth and pollutant removal. We also summarize several approaches to tune the activities of nanozymes. Finally, we make comparisons between nanozymes and other catalytic materials (other artificial enzymes, natural enzymes, organic catalysts and nanomaterial-based catalysts) and address the current challenges and future directions (302 references).

This Review provides an overview of the synthesis of one-dimensional (1D) composite nanomaterials by electrospinning and their applications. After a brief description of the development of the electrospinning technique, the transformation of an inorganic nanocomponent or polymer into another kind of polymer or inorganic matrix is discussed in terms of the electrospinning process, including the direct-dispersed method, gas-solid reaction, in situ photoreduction, sol-gel method, emulsion electrospinning method, solvent evaporation, and coaxial electrospinning. In addition, various applications of such 1D composite nanomaterials are highlighted in terms of electronic and optical nanodevices, chemical and biological sensors, catalysis and electrocatalysis, superhydrophobic surfaces, environment, energy, and biomedical fields. An increasing number of investigations show that electrospinning has been not only a focus of academic study in the laboratory but is also being applied in a great many technological fields.

One-dimensional conducting polymer nanocomposites: Synthesis, properties and applications

Porous silica nanofibers containing catalytic silver nanoparticles have been synthesized by a new method that combines sol−gel chemistry and electrospinning technique. Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), poly[3-(trimethoxysily)propyl methacrylate] (PMCM), and silver nitrate (AgNO3) were used as precursors for the production of silica−PMCM hybrid fibers containing AgNO3. Calcination of the hybrid fibers at high temperatures results in porous silica fibers because of thermal decomposition of PMCM polymer and in conversion of AgNO3 to silver nanoparticles. The color of the fiber mats changed from white to dark golden yellow due to the surface plasma resonance of the silver nanoparticles embedded in the fibers. The size and density of the silver particles in the silica fibers could be tuned by varying the size of the fibers, amount of AgNO3 introduced, and the thermal treatment conditions. Working parameters are very important to understand not only the nature of electrospinning but also the conversion of polymer solutions into nanofibers through electrospinning. Those parameters can be broadly divided into three parts such as solution parameters, process parameters, and ambient parameters. Each of those parameters can affect the fibers morphologies and by proper control of those parameters we can fabricate electrospun fibers with desired morphologies and diameters. In this chapter, we will present a concise introduction of those parameters and their influence on fiber properties.
