Ultrastructural changes in the small intestine induced by ethanol.

TL;DR: Mitochondrial abnormalities and dilation of the endoplasmic reticulum and cisternae of the Golgi apparatus were observed in jejunal and ileal villi of rats and similar changes were found in cells of the crypts and villa of human volunteers after ethanol administration, suggesting that ethanol is injurious to the small intestine in the absence of nutritional deficiency.
