Cloud computing is changing the way industries and enterprises do their businesses in that dynamically scalable and virtualized resources are provided as a service over the Internet. This model creates a brand new opportunity for enterprises. In this paper, some of the essential features of cloud computing are briefly discussed with regard to the end-users, enterprises that use the cloud as a platform, and cloud providers themselves. Cloud computing is emerging as one of the major enablers for the manufacturing industry; it can transform the traditional manufacturing business model, help it to align product innovation with business strategy, and create intelligent factory networks that encourage effective collaboration. Two types of cloud computing adoptions in the manufacturing sector have been suggested, manufacturing with direct adoption of cloud computing technologies and cloud manufacturing-the manufacturing version of cloud computing. Cloud computing has been in some of key areas of manufacturing such as IT, pay-as-you-go business models, production scaling up and down per demand, and flexibility in deploying and customizing solutions. In cloud manufacturing, distributed resources are encapsulated into cloud services and managed in a centralized way. Clients can use cloud services according to their requirements. Cloud users can request services ranging from product design, manufacturing, testing, management, and all other stages of a product life cycle.

From cloud computing to cloud manufacturing

Cloud manufacturing is a new concept extending and adopting the concept of Cloud computing for manufacturing. The aim is to transform manufacturing businesses to a new paradigm in that manufacturing capabilities and resources are componentized, integrated and optimized globally. This study presents an interoperable manufacturing perspective based on Cloud manufacturing. A literature search has been undertaken regarding Cloud architecture and technologies that can assist Cloud manufacturing. Manufacturing resources and capabilities are discussed in terms of Cloud service. A service-oriented, interoperable Cloud manufacturing system is proposed. Service methodologies are developed to support two types of Cloud users, i.e., customer user and enterprise user, along with standardized data models describing Cloud service and relevant features. Two case studies are undertaken to evaluate the proposed system. Cloud technology brings into manufacturing industry with a number of benefits such as openness, cost-efficiency, resource sharing and production scalability.

An interoperable solution for Cloud manufacturing

Cloud computing is emerging as a new paradigm of large-scale distributed computing. It is a framework for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of computing resources. Load balancing is one of the main challenges in cloud computing which is required to distribute the dynamic workload across multiple nodes to ensure that no single node is overwhelmed. It helps in optimal utilization of resources and hence in enhancing the performance of the system. The goal of load balancing is to minimize the resource consumption which will further reduce energy consumption and carbon emission rate that is the dire need of cloud computing. This determines the need of new metrics, energy consumption and carbon emission for energy-efficient load balancing in cloud computing. This paper discusses the existing load balancing techniques in cloud computing and further compares them based on various parameters like performance, scalability, associated overhead etc. that are considered in different techniques. It further discusses these techniques from energy consumption and carbon emission perspective.

Cloud manufacturing – a critical review of recent development and future trends

Cloud Storage is an important part of Cloud Computing, and it provides a way to achieve large scale storage architecture. And virtual storage is a strategy for Cloud Storage. A load balancing virtual storage strategy (LBVS) is proposed in this paper. The contribution of this strategy is that, it provides a large scale net data storage model and Storage as a Service model based on Cloud Storage. Three layers architecture is used to achieve storage virtualization, and two load balancing modules are used to balance systems load. This paper describes details of LBVS strategy, the model of virtual storage as well as how to implement the LBVS with iRODS and two load balancing algorithms.

The resource sharing method in cloud manufacturing environment is proposed to support resource sharing and cooperative work between enterprises for global manufacturing. The description of manufacturing services and the business-driver building cloud manufacturing application method are introduced in detail. At last, we make a conclusion and put forward the future work.

The Application of Cloud Computing in Textile-order Service

In order to fully make use of the digital multimedia resources, improve the flexibility of museum system and adapt to the user's requirement on demand, we present a personalized service customization approach on Digital Museum platform based on data grid technology. It shields the heterogeneity of resources via data access service, so that the enormous dispersed multimedia resources can be effectively accessed and integrated. Then, personalized service composition customization and portal customization technology are proposed. At the end of this paper, it is applied on the customization application instances: the construction of 3D scene modeling and personalized portal interface in the archaeological Digital Museum and ancient digital technologies museum of Shandong University as a running case study.
