The controversy related to the environment pollution is increasing in human life and in the eco-system. Especially, the water pollution is growing rapidly due to the wastewater discharge from the industries. The only way to find the new water resource is the reuse of treated wastewater. Several remediation technologies are available which provides a convenience to reuse the reclaimed wastewater. Heavy metals like Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cd, Hg, etc. contributes various environmental problems based on their toxicity. These toxic metals are exposed to human and environment, the accumulation of ions takes place which causes serious health and environmental hazards. Hence, it is a major concern in the environment. Due to this concern, the significance of developing technology for removing heavy metals has been increased. This paper contributes the outline of new literature with two objectives. First, it provides the sketch about treatment technologies followed by their heavy metal capture capacity from industrial effluent. The treatment performance, their remediation capacity and probable environmental and health impacts were deliberated in this review article. Conclusively, this review paper furnishes the information about the important methods incorporated in lab scale studies which are required to identify the feasible and convenient wastewater treatment. Moreover, attempts have been made to confer the emphasis on sequestration of heavy metals from industrial effluent and establish the scientific background for reducing the discharge of heavy metals into the environment.

Efficient techniques for the removal of toxic heavy metals from aquatic environment: A review

Novel magnetic biochars (MBC) were prepared by one-step pyrolysis of FeCl3-laden biomass and employed for Hg0 removal in simulated combustion flue gas. The sample characterization indicated that highly dispersed Fe3O4 particles could be deposited on the MBC surface. Both enhanced surface area and excellent magnetization property were obtained. With the activation of FeCl3, more oxygen-rich functional groups were formed on the MBC, especially the C═O group. The MBC exhibited far greater Hg0 removal performance compared to the nonmagnetic biochar (NMBC) under N2 + 4% O2 atmosphere in a wide reaction temperature window (120–250 °C). The optimal pyrolysis temperature for the preparation of MBC is 600 °C, and the best FeCl3/biomass impregnation mass ratio is 1.5 g/g. Heavy metals and dyes are major pollutants that pose potential threat to the health of humans and ecosystems. Various technologies are available to remediate such pollution, but these processes are costly, have high energy requirements and generate toxic sludges and wastes that need to be carefully disposed. There is therefore a need for methods that are more efficient, cost effective and environment friendly for water purification. Adsorption is regarded as a green, clean and versatile method for wastewater treatment. In particular, biodegradable and non-toxic materials such as cellulose-based materials are of interest for water purification. Moreover, the surface of cellulose contains many hydroxyl groups that facilitate the incorporation of chemical moieties, thereby improving pollutant adsorption. Here, we review the most relevant applications of cellulose-based materials for wastewater treatment. A major point is that reducing cellulosic dimension to nanometric levels highly improves adsorption of heavy metals and dyes from wastewaters. Nanocellulose and functionalized nanocellulose are thus promising for wastewater treatment.
